A friend of mine calls me “Miracle” and himself “Disaster”. He states I am the Miracle on Luckie Street and he is the Disaster on Loser street. For about a year now he has called me, “Miracle” and I call him “Disaster”.
Unfortunately he isn’t entirely kidding and he does have a low self-esteem problem. He hit the big-time and made some big money, but then lost it all due to drinking and drugging. He has since come to know the Lord. Today he is clean and sober, in fulltime ministry, and has been for decades.
Since entering fulltime ministry he now lives week to week and relies on love offerings and mostly small gifts from various churches and friends. It provides him with a very basic and meager existence. The bright lights, flash and cash of his singing career are now in the distant past and he has exchanged steak and champagne for peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and a glass of milk.
Recently he was railing about what a failure he was and I sternly admonished him for his low self-esteem. I told him he was building an absolute fortune in heaven and unlike the fortunes being built on this earth, his would last forever.
It’s easy for those who are in the ministry to get discouraged, especially when they look around at those who have many earthly possessions. News flash: The average person lives just 77.9 years; eternity is forever!
My friend’s name is Kenny Munds and he will be giving his testimony at Honey Lake Church in just two short weeks. I already mentioned him once in Words for the Day and I do so because you need to hear this man’s story. He is so talented and yet so humble, you are sure to be blessed.
If we got called home today, what would we take with us? Nothing, not one possession! We only take the things that we have done in this life, both the good and the bad. We will appear alone in front of the Lord and give an account for our actions. The blood of Christ will cover our sins, (the bad), and our sins will be remembered no more, provided we are believers, and that only leaves the things we have done in His name, (the good) that will remain and continue for all of eternity. It is all that a believer can take into the next life.
Kenny will have a big mansion and treasure that will endure forever when time on this earth is no more. He might struggle with making ends meet now in his ministry, but after that last heartbeat, he will be rich beyond comprehension.
It is something for all of us to think about this morning.
Where is your fortune being accumulated? Here, where it will disappear, or in heaven where it will last forever?
Have a great weekend and go to church this Sunday, (and mark your calendar for Kenny Munds at Honey Lake Church the following Sunday).
Matt. 6:19
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal!”
