It’s interesting to me to see how divided our country has become. I’ve had quite a few folks angrily unsubscribe lately, and I’m getting more dark letters and hate mail now as any time during the 14 years I’ve written Words for the Day.
So should I be discouraged?
I was at a party the other night and a friend and I began discussing what “our side” needs to do in order to win the next election. His solution was to give in on the issues of abortion and homosexual marriages. He said that the majority of Americans are for those issues and if we want to win another election we simply must concede on those points.
I’ve been studying the Bible for over four decades now. I’ve read it completely through so many times including numerous different translations, that I don’t even remember how many. While that does not make me a theologian, I do think I have a pretty good knowledge of God’s word.
Hmmm…What would Jesus do? The question might better be posed: What did He do? Jesus stuck to the truth of the Bible right up until the time it cost Him His life. He didn’t become politically correct; He didn’t go along to get along; He didn’t concede on the difficult issues; He stood by the Bible. That is the same Bible that I quote five times a week in WFTD and will continue to quote for however long I continue to write it.
I don’t know about you, but I care more about what God thinks than society. I’m sure I don’t interpret every Scripture exactly the same as everyone else that reads it, but anyone who can read the Bible and come away convinced that abortion or homosexuality are okay with God, simply isn’t reading the same Bible that I read.
I’m perplexed at the doomsday crowd that is predicting the end of the world on December 21st of this year which happens to coincide with the coming Winter Solstice. Over 3,000 books and countless websites claim that the Maya predicted the Earth will be destroyed on this date.
According to them, the Earth will be destroyed by colliding with an asteroid, or by being pulled into the black hole at the center of the Milky Way Galaxy. Others claim a galactic planetary alignment will tear the Earth apart or the Earth’s magnetic poles will shift and our planet will turn upside down.
People are preparing for it and of course reliably are gathering at the world’s favorite place for the occult to assemble, Stonehenge, all because the ancient Maya civilization predicted it on that date. Of course our illustrious media is hyping it with Fox News Network airing a special on it, “Countdown to Doomsday”.
The sky is falling – The sky is falling! The Mayan calendar ends on that date so we are all doomed.
Sigh…
Our world is ready to embrace the Mayans and all things occult, but reject the Holy Scripture and truth of God.
So in answer to the question, “Am I discouraged?” – The answer is yes. I wish I had the words to convince the multitudes of the truths in the Bible. It distresses me to no end to think how many souls will end up eternally separated from God and His goodness instead of going to heaven for eternity, because they reject the truth of Holy Scripture.
We have a choice. I’m not going to concede when it comes to accepting evil as a necessary evil that is a precondition of winning the next election. To do so makes us no different than the world. I will stand alone if necessary.
The truth is in the Bible and that includes all of those things that our “modern” society wants to reject including those contentious issues of abortion, homosexuality, heads of households, qualifications for preachers and deacons, and so forth…
Matthew Henry wrote: “The belief of the truth brings the sinner to rely on Christ, and so to love and obey him; it is sealed by the Holy Spirit upon his heart. We have no certain proof of anything having been delivered by the apostles, more than what we find contained in the Holy Scriptures. Let us then stand fast in the doctrines taught by the apostles, and reject all additions, and vain traditions.
Selah…
If you’re traveling today, be safe and as we say in Florida, “Arrive alive!” and enjoy your turkey day.

With all these things in mind, dear brothers and sisters, stand firm and keep a strong grip on the teaching we passed on to you both in person and by letter.
