Usually on Sunday mornings I listen to gospel music as I get ready to go to church. We have a powerful stereo system and I have it piped throughout our house and I am a little hard of hearing, so if I ever have a visitor over prior to departing for church it is quite a refreshing’ experience for them and of course my neighbors. I believe that church music is very much a part of worship. I love to listen to it and I feel closer to God when I listen to it. My youngest son was not much of a fan of this music when he was still living at home and going to high school. My home gym used to be located directly under his bedroom. Being an early riser and lifelong insomniac I would work out in my gym every morning beginning at 4:30. It was inspiring to me to begin my day working out with weights and listening to Elvis Presley belt out gospel music. I cannot say that my son was inspired’, nor did he enjoy it. I frequently heard from him about this, but sadly for him it was to no avail.
When I used to drive to work, this passion for church music held true with my car stereo too and I had a CD of Elvis singing gospel music in my car as well. By the time I got to work I would be in a good mood and ready to face the problems of the world. (I might not stay in a good mood but at least I started my day in one.) I was sharing this musical secret to success with my young son one day; (one of those old bull/young bull moments if you will). He looked at me like I was insane. He was incredulous that I would even have the nerve to suggest that he listen to Elvis singing gospel after having been tortured by it every morning as he tried to sleep.
Time went on and one morning I heard my son walking down the hall humming one of the tunes that was on the gospel track that Elvis laid down. It was not lost on me that he had borrowed my new car for a few days and had undoubtedly been listening to my CD’s on the way in to work. The rest is history; needless to say he bought the CD and often listens to inspiring church music as he slowly makes his way through morning traffic. (The Lord works in mysterious ways and the young bull becomes a little wiser.)
Everyone should have a time set aside to study the word of God, meditate, and pray. I choose the mornings as it helps me to at least begin the day on the right track. If I can set the mood for this special time by listening to a tremendous choir and orchestra praising the Lord, it makes it all the better. If your schedule is just too crazy to permit a morning quiet time as described, at least try listening to gospel or the church music of your liking on the way in to work. You will be amazed as to the difference it will make in starting your day out in a wonderful mood.
I believe God loves to listen to music too and I am not talking about the kind of music’ where someone dressed in pants five times too big for them and a baseball cap turned sideways screams poetry in time with a drum machine and a record that is being scratched with a bass so loud that your ear lobes vibrate. I sincerely believe the choir, orchestra, and singers in heaven will be something to behold.
Have a great weekend and go to church this Sunday!
1 Cor. 2:9
“Eye has not seen, nor ear
heard
Nor have entered into the heart
of man
The things which God has
prepared for those who love
Him.”
