I’m rapidly approaching the Words for the Day website anniversary date of June 2000. The other day I asked the webmaster of the site if we could determine how many words I’d written in all that time. In a few minutes he sent me an e-mail and notified me that he’d determined that I’ve written over one and a half million words.
Egad… That’s a heck of a lot of pontificating and quite the lengthy discourse.
Through those years I’ve experienced tragedy such as the suicide of my brother and moments of great joy such as the birth of my grandkids. I’ve gone from being depressed to overjoyed; sad to glad. Each day I wrote about whatever was on my mind at the time and how it relates to the Bible, and it is all there for anyone to review. I feel that I’ve been consistent through those many years, because I’ve related everything to the Bible.
Speaking of consistency, yesterday I saw a hilariously funny political ad placed by Mitt Romney in the presidential race. It features Rick Santorum addressing an audience with a very serious look on his face. He was solemnly stating that “No one puts words in Rick Santorum’s mouth” and then he states, “And I know Mitt Romney and he’s a conservative”. As soon as those words come out of his mouth, Romney comes on and states, “I’m Mitt Romney and I approve this message”.
Ha Ha Ha Ha
This has to be pretty embarrassing to Santorum since he’s been pounding the drums during his entire campaign stating that he is the only true conservative in the race and Romney is nothing but a lowdown moderate. One has to wonder why he would endorse Romney in such a manner just four years ago and now has done a complete 180.
Hmmm… Do you think it might have something to do with him running for office now?
Ha Ha Ha Ha
This is what disgusts me about politics. Disingenuous is probably too polite, but I won’t call him a liar because that would be too rude, and besides I already have 210 unread e-mails sitting in my inbox this morning and I don’t need irate Santorum fans adding to the mix.
One thing I love about the Bible is its constancy and consistency. The Bible was written over a period of 1500 years by forty different authors, in three languages, and on three continents, but when reading it, the clear unmistakable singular voice of God rings true page after unerring page. There are no inconsistencies and every word is pure and refreshing.
Just for the heck of it I went back to the very first Words for the Day stored in the database to try and determine how it might have changed. Actually I’m pleased to say that they look much like the ones written today. I like to think my knowledge of the Bible has broadened and my writing skills have improved over those 12 years, but the basic premise of WFTD has always been to analyze the real life situations transpiring in my life and utilize the Bible to better understand what God would have me to do at any particular point in order to receive the utmost out of this life (and the next).
The Bible is the basis of the consistency for WFTD. I don’t make up my own theology. I use the Bible as the foundation of everything that I write in this devotional and though I’m a mere mortal, weak sinner, and full of flaws, it is powerful and perfect in every sense of the word. The only variance or inconsistency would be any misinterpretation that I might have of its verses and of course my warped sense of humor.
I don’t know about you, but I am very thankful for the incorruptible vestige of honesty of the Bible in this corrupt and often dishonest fallen world. I might fail my God, family, myself, and others including you, but the Bible will never fail any of us because it is the Holy word of God almighty. And that my dear friends is one of the many things I love about it.
I do want you to know that I appreciate your tolerating me all these years and if you would like to read any of the old WFTD, most have been saved in a database and can easily be accessed on my website and searched by keyword using the search feature. I hope you enjoy reading WFTD and will tell others about it; if not, well … then phooey on you.
1 Thess. 2:13
And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is at work in you who believe.
