2011

I’ve been thinking lately about how happy I am to see fog beginning to appear on Honey Lake in the mornings. That big old warm lake reminds me of a giant cup of coffee steaming as the cooler air hovers over it. Yes the weather is finally beginning to change and Labor Day nearly always marks the beginning of the turn of the season (and cool mornings) and it can’t come soon enough to suit me.

Many of my “friends” have summer homes in Montana, Colorado, North Carolina and other cool locales and they don’t hesitate to write me often to sadistically tell me how wonderful the crisp mornings are every day.

Blah!

Such is not the case here. In fact we conducted an outdoor wedding a couple of weeks ago and in anticipation of the heat and humidity, the bride had her invitations printed on hand fans. They were married under a huge oak tree overlooking the lake.

I strolled out in my yard to observe the ceremony and from my perch high atop the hill overlooking the ceremony site it looked like a sea of fans flapping back and forth as the wedding guests tried to remain cool. (They were just a stone’s throw away from drop dead gorgeous air conditioned Honey Lake Church and I bet many were wishing that is where it was being held.)

We are rapidly reaching a point of completion of construction at Honey Lake, and just like my longing for cool weather I am impatient for that momentous day to arrive. All of those construction headaches will be gone and bliss will be ushered in…

Hmmm… As I thought about this a couple of disturbing thoughts crossed my mind.

Even though all of the hard work and headaches of construction are nearly behind us, in just a few short weeks we will be fully open for business and an entire new set of problems will have beset us. We have been booking weddings, spiritual and corporate retreats, meetings, parties, and family reunions on a daily basis and to assemble a team that will professionally maintain our goal of providing outstanding customer service and offering products only of the highest quality will be an enormous new challenge. Sigh…

As for Cold weather, it gets old after a while too. In fact after enduring several months of it last year, I distinctly remember wishing that it would warm up, trees would bud anew, the azaleas would bloom, things would turn green again, and those spring gobblers would begin gobbling at the Aucilla train every morning. Sigh…

Yikes! Is there such a thing as contentment?

My son and his sales team had an awesome sales month for the resort this month and in fact set a new sales record for the sixth consecutive month. He closed a number of deals yesterday on the last day of the month and albeit he achieved his new record, he was wondering out loud if that would adversely affect next month’s sales.

I stopped him cold in his tracks. I told him that when he is on top of the peak that he should enjoy the sunshine and in fact bask in it. There will be plenty enough time for the gloom and doom of the valley when he visits there. “Don’t worry about the sales from next month son; enjoy your record today! Bask in the sunshine and be content.”

Hmmm… Sounds like I need to take my own advice.

Don’t always be wishing for what you don’t have. As always I go to the Bible and the perfect verse illustrates this concept far more eloquently than I ever could.

Matt. 6:34

Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.
