I watched Larry King Live one night and “Diamond” Joe Esposito was being interviewed.
His claim to fame was that he was the best friend of Elvis Presley. He was with him throughout his “glory” years right up until the day he died. We are coming up on yet another anniversary of Elvis’s departure from this world. (He died on August 16th 1977). Young people do not even remember Elvis anymore, but at one time no one was more famous.
His death at age 42 shocked the world. I still enjoy listening to his albums, especially his gospel songs. Elvis seemingly had it all. He made several billion dollars back when a million dollars was “real “money. He was idolized by hundreds of millions of adoring fans worldwide. He had unabated talent with a voice that in my opinion has never been equaled. He had women, money, cars, houses, fame, everything the world had to offer, yet he was depressed and miserable.
At the time of his death he was a drug addict. Diamond Joe said that no doctor would turn down a request for drugs from a “big star” like Elvis. Whatever Elvis wanted, Elvis got, including the drugs that took his life. He did not achieve peace, nor was Elvis happy. According to his best friend, he was lonely and depressed.
Elvis found that the best the world had to offer, money, fame, power, sex, drugs, adulation and accomplishments cannot give us peace and happiness, those can only come from our personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
I don’t know if Elvis is in heaven or not. Only God knows that, I don’t like to even think about it. He certainly did not live the Christian life which means that God could not offer him peace, joy and happiness while on this earth. I believe that we should look at Elvis and learn an important lesson. The best that the world has to offer is not enough. Only God can give us what we truly need.
Elvis was often referred to as the “King”, but his kingship burned out like a candle.
Satan was the highest angel, but he and one third of the angels of heaven fell like meteors from heaven. No creature, no matter how much beauty, intelligence and talent God provided to it, can go it alone without God. God is the answer, not power, possessions, nor pleasure.
