Temple of doom?

Many take pride in their house and maintain it superbly, while others let theirs deteriorate and become an eyesore and a “rat trap”. Most thinking people take very good care of their house; after all they must live in it. The Bible teaches that our body is a spiritual house. It also states that it is the temple of the Holy Spirit for Christians who are joined to God. The Holy Spirit actually lives within us and our body is His temple.

As with their homes, people vary widely as to how they take care of their bodies. Some have pride and keep them up; others let themselves go. Have you ever wondered about this? Why do some of us take very good
 care of our temple while others do not? Some let it get run
down, bombard it with excessive food and drink, let the sun blister its surface, risk disease by engaging in sexual immorality, take drugs that destroy it such as alcohol, ignore exercise and sensible diets and so forth.

It takes some careful thought, setting some goals and a determination to do better, but most of all it requires EFFORT and SACRIFICE to keep your house in “tip-top” shape. Hence the reason I believe that many times we fail. In today’s culture, Americans in particular are not willing to forego their slightest desire, even if it ruins their health. It seems we aren’t willing to expend the slightest effort to maintain it, as would be required by exercising three days a week.

One of Jesus’ angriest moments that I have found recorded in the Bible was when the temple in Jerusalem was defiled and He ran the moneychangers out and turned over tables. This tells how He felt about His “Father’s house”. How do you suppose He feels when we deliberately violate and defile our human temple, the Holy Spirit’s house?

1Corinthians 6:17…
But he who is joined to the Lord
Is one spirit with Him…
Or do you not know that your
Body is the temple of the Holy Spirit
Who is in you…
For you were bought at a price;
Therefore glorify God in your body
And in your spirit, which are God’s.
