I dreamed last night that I was sitting and talking to a friend and the actor Paul Newman came over and sat down and started talking to my friend as though I was not even there. In a minute he handed me a piece of paper which had an offer from him to buy a piece of property and he told me to take it down the street and deliver it to the guy that was selling the property and then he resumed talking to my friend. I looked at the paper sitting on the table and just kept sitting there listening to their conversation as if nothing had happened. In a few minutes he looked at me with his “Cool hand Luke” look and he asked if I was deaf. I told him that if he wanted that paper delivered that he should deliver it himself. He stood up in a menacing fashion and told me that he ought to teach me a lesson. I stood up and towered over him, (he was a little sawed off guy; I love it when that happens). He looked up at me and saw my most menacing look and sat back down and started talking to my buddy again and I sat back down and resumed listening again.
Ahhh those were the good old days, back whenever someone did something I did not like I could just settle it in true barbarian fashion. Lately one of the readers of Words for the Day has been sending me nasty letters. He averages about one a week. I can tell from his writing that he is a grumpy old man. He is insulting to a point whereby I would dearly like to thump him up side his head. He pays nothing for WFTD and it is easy to unsubscribe. I cannot understand why if he does not like what I write that he just does not unsubscribe. Every time I write something about abortion, homosexuality, stem cell research, or liberals led by Obama, several people do just that, unsubscribe. I realize it will happen before I ever write about those subjects. Polls tell us that people are greatly divided almost down the middle on those subjects and some have strong feelings as I do about them. I believe I am right about my viewpoints and back it up with Scripture. I believe we should speak out against moral wrongs; others disagree with my interpretation and that is their free will. They do not send me hate mail once a week challenging my manhood.
Back in the day I would challenge this guy to a duel with guns, knives, club, or fists. I would meet him anywhere and anytime and we would settle this once and for all. I would tell him I did not like his attitude or him and then I would try to knock his teeth through the back of his head. Hmmm I guess now that I am a Christian, those days were not so good after all. Now I do not even respond to his lunacy and ravings and just ignore him altogether and hope that he will lose my e-mail address or unsubscribe.
The Bible tells us that as much as it is in our power we should try to get along with everyone and we should do good. To me, part of doing good is spreading the word of God. It also tells us to stand by the Bible and our faith. The disciples were not popular and in fact were martyred for preaching the truth. Here in the last days we will see anti-Christian sentiment get worse. The homosexuals protesting Christians and Mormons are but a small sample of what will happen in years to come. Christians will become greatly persecuted as they are in Iran and Saudi Arabia and Christians will find it impossible to obtain a job, or even keep from getting killed by the anti-Christ’s followers. I say stand up for your beliefs and bring them on. Personally I don’t care if just me and one other person read WFTD or just me; I will always try to write it according to my interpretation of the Bible and not to what some in society want to hear based on their human logic.
Grumpy old man if you read this just go ahead and unsubscribe already I do not want to be tempted into exchanging nasty letters or worse thump you one.
Gal. 6:9
And let us not grow weary while
doing good for in due season we
shall reap if we do not lose heart.
Therefore as we have opportunity,
let us do good to all, especially
to those who are of the household
of faith.
