We’ve been interviewing some folks for a key position in our new hospitality business and my youngest son has been appalled to discover that some of the candidates are woefully lacking in understanding what he terms as “basic” knowledge of various business practices, such as how to prepare a pro forma. He goes on and on about it, as though everyone and his brother should know all of this stuff. It is incredulous to him that even the most seemingly insignificant business principles draw blank stares when he quizzes some of these candidates.
He has taken for granted all of those years that I pounded that business knowledge into his and his brother’s heads and it comes so naturally to him now that he mistakenly thinks everyone has it. I explained to him that no one is born knowing all of this stuff and then I told him how lucky he was to have such a loving and thoughtful father who was willing at great sacrifice to patiently teach him the ropes, beginning soon after he could crawl and continuing right through today.
Hmmm It was after he rolled his eyes at me and proceeded to stick his finger in his throat and pretended to gag that I became convinced that he does not buy into that line of thinking
Ingrate…
I got a letter from a very loving mother yesterday whose young son recently accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior. She and her husband have taught their son about Jesus since he has been old enough to understand and have prayed for him and asked others, (including me), to do so as well. Their extraordinary efforts to introduce their son to Christ have paid off, and now the son whom they love with all of their hearts, will forever be united with Christ.
I’m very proud of my children and not just because of their above average business acumen, but because they are Christians and love the Lord. The time spent training up our kids and grandkids in those critical early years will affect them for the rest of their lives on this earth and forevermore. The doting mom who excitedly wrote to me to share the good news said it best, “My baby’s soul is with the Lord now!!”
Folks it just don’t git no better than that!
But what about all of those kids who don’t have doting moms and dads to teach them about Jesus and life? Some of the candidates applying for that key position within our organization unfortunately will never even be considered for the position because they cannot qualify. The same holds true for those poor souls who face God at the judgment without the blood of Christ covering their sins, they cannot qualify for inclusion into heaven.
Not everyone is fortunate enough to have loving parents who will spend the necessary time to mentor their children and teach them the basic fundamentals about Christ and life. That tells me that it is up to the rest of us to train them. What greater privilege could one have than to witness to a child today? Remember your kids and grandkids have friends; might be a good place to start.
Proverbs 22:6
Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
Spend some time with a kid
