A friend of mine asked me where the spirit of Jesus went after He died on the cross and He awaited resurrection. Some believe He went to Hell and preached to those imprisoned there. I Peter 3:18 & 19 tell us “…being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by His Spirit: By which also He went and PREACHED UNTO THE SPIRITS IN PRISON…”. Also Ephesians 4:9, “…He also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?”.
Another theory is that He went to Hell and suffered there. Acts 2:31 quotes David from Psalm 16:10 saying “For you will not leave my soul in hell; neither will you suffer your Holy One to see corruption.” His soul was not left in Hell implies that He went there but didn’t stay.
The other theory is that He went to heaven. “…TODAY shalt you will be with me in paradise” Jesus stated this to the thief on the cross.
Actually all three theories have a chance of being correct. Personally I believe that He preached in Hell to those who died before He witnessed to the world in an attempt to save some of them. I think he suffered on the cross but not in Hell. I have a hard time with Jesus saying this day you will be paradise with me to the thief, because that could mean He went there during this period and could be a killer to my belief system on this matter.
I’m not dogmatic about any of it. That means I don’t know what to believe. Maybe in a case like this we should just believe what we believe????
You may think it is folly to try and discern such things but I find them interesting, and I found a verse that makes me feel good about it. Have a great weekend
Prov 25:2
It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honor of kings is to search out a matter.
Hmmmm….
