I love to fish, but I don’t like to fish and not catch anything. All that stuff about being out on the water, enjoying the sun, breeze, and nature is just so much talk to me. I want a bent rod. When Jesus was recruiting a couple of fisherman to be disciples, John and James, they had worked on their boat fishing all night long and had not caught anything. Jesus came upon them and in spite of their previous bad luck He instructed them to let their nets down and immediately they caught so many fish that their nets nearly broke. They were astonished at the catch.

I have had some days when the fish just could not be caught, (not many mind you 🙂 ). It is extremely frustrating and I can relate as to the level of astonishment John and James must have felt when Jesus changed their “luck” simply upon His command. On their own they could do nothing, but with Jesus they achieved the best they ever achieved.

Actually it was not “luck”, but the power of God. Too many people try to attribute God’s power and answered prayer to luck, coincidence, or “Karma”, when the truth is that God is all powerful and can do what we cannot do without His help. Before I became a Christian my life was a terrible mess and about all I was a candidate for was a prison, insane asylum, or a graveyard. On my own I could do nothing but make things worse and worse, but when I became a Christian and Jesus came into my life, my life dramatically turned around. I have encountered former acquaintances from that period of my life and like John and James they are “astonished” at the difference. Was it luck, coincidence or Karma? No, it was the power of God changing what man cannot change alone. The difference in my life was Christ!

Don’t rely on your own wiles to hack out your existence in this dangerous world. Team up with God. Pray for His guidance and assistance in everything that you do. When it happens, attribute it to God answering your prayer, not luck or coincidence or Karma.

John 7:38

He who believes in Me, as the
Scripture has said, “Out of his heart
will flow rivers of living water.”
