I have a friend whose wife exemplifies the word contentious. No matter what he does she gives him grief about it. He has several children and he is a terrific father to them. He also does most of the household chores and does most of the cooking. He works from sunup until sundown in a difficult job filled with stress and she does not work at all. She gripes about him constantly and no matter what he does it is never enough for her. He sometimes complains to me about her, but I am reluctant to give advice. My past experience is that it is pretty much useless to counsel someone in that predicament. The Bible states that “it is better to dwell in the wilderness than with a contentious and angry woman”; then again “it is better to dwell in a corner of a housetop than in a house shared with a contentious woman”. It also states that “a continual dripping on a very rainy day and a contentious woman are alike; whoever restrains her restrains the wind and grasps oil with his right hand”. Who can restrain the wind and grasp oil? I think my friend dug a pit and will have a difficult time digging out of it. He does not want to leave because he loves his children deeply and his religious beliefs go against divorce.
There are things in life that are too difficult for human logic. When one is encountered there is but one course to pursue and that is to turn it over to the Lord. My advice to my buddy is to pray about it.
Proverbs 3:5
Trust in the Lord with all of your
heart,
And lean not on your own
understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge
Him,
And He shall direct your
Paths.
