I know some people who today can be best described as having a broken heart. Sadness overwhelms them and depression is upon them every waking moment. It seems as though there is nothing but despair in all directions. Actually according to the Bible times like these are very special in our relationship with God, because it is these times that God draws close to us. The Bible speaks specifically to those who have a broken heart and offers comfort.
If you know someone who is suffering from a broken heart, perhaps you can gently let them know that during these dark times, there is a silver lining in their life; God is very near.
When I was lost and my life was decimated by sin, I told a nurse in the hospital that I was too far gone for Jesus to help. She snorted contemtuously and stated, “Jesus is God, He can do anything that He wants!” She was exactly right. Jesus is God. He performed miracle after miracle including even raising Lazarus from the dead and there was no doubt that He could heal me and change my life too. He did just that. Trust me He can heal your pain too.
Unquestionably the saddest time of my entire life was when my brother took his own life. If anyone’s heart has ever been broken, it could not have been broken any worse than mine when this tragic event occurred. When I was overwhelmed with sadness and grief, how lucky I was to have the Lord near me during those dark and difficult days.
How lucky I am now to have His gentle loving Spirit surround me when I am sad. Just imagine that almighty God, awesome creator of everything seen and unseen, Ruler of all, takes time to draw near to us, to love and comfort us when we are broken hearted. Thank God for His promise to “draw near” when we are broken hearted.
