Last Christmas I bought a shitzue puppy for my wife. (Please don’t ask me how to pronounce it.) I paid a pretty sum for him and he is a direct descendant of a famous “show dog”. This dog is absolutely beautiful with gorgeous coloration and long silky hair. The only problem with him is that he is dumb as a rock as evidenced by the fact that he prefers my wife over me. He follows her around everywhere, and every step she takes, he takes. He even accompanies her to the bathroom, (further evidence of how dumb he is). He is totally devoted to her and her alone. He will only have something to do with me, if she is gone from the premises.

As I look at this little pup I wonder why he is so-o-o-o devoted to my wife. He does not seem to mind when she first wakes up and has no makeup on and is slogging around the house in her pajamas and slippers looking like, well, like she just woke up. He does not mind that she feeds him the same thing every day. He does not care if she is in a surly mood or in a good mood. He just seems to wag his tail with equal vigor no matter what she says or does. He appears to always just take the good with the bad and maintains his excellent attitude of undying love towards her as evidenced by that silly grin that is always plastered on his little face.

I was thinking of this pup’s devotion to my wife this morning and I wondered how many husbands and/or wives love their spouses with the same amount of love that this little dog lavishes upon my wife. One thing about writing this message is that I am free to ask personal questions without getting slapped. Think hard about this one! Do you love your spouse?

Hmmm I guess it is only fair for me to answer too. God has mightily blessed me with a wife, three sons, six grandchildren, a successful career, friends, tremendous accomplishments, material possessions, and so on, but I have to truthfully say that second only to God comes my wife. Yes I love my wife with all of my heart. The pup and I have that much in common anyway. The Bible has much to say about our spouses, but Proverbs probably says it best.

Proverbs 18:22
He who finds a wife finds a good thing
and obtains favor from the LORD.
