Recently a national magazine did an article about me. Basically it chronicled how I overcame some tough obstacles and transformed my life and ultimately became successful. Critical to my success was becoming a Christian and Christ is the primary reason that I not only survived but managed to thrive, but accepting Christ as my Savior was only the foundation for the solution. I had to build upon His foundation through my own hard work. Christ expects each of us to do our part and there is no reward for the lazy sluggard. Christ has presented me with opportunities all of my life; however I have had to rise to the occasion and to seize the moment and work hard to bring them to fruition. I worked 20 hours per day six days a week for years in order to build my various businesses to success. Yes Christ blessed me, but I had to do my share. I believe we are all presented with opportunities and those who succeed are the ones that realize that God is not going to bless someone who sits idly by waiting for their blessing to be brought to them gift wrapped and ready to start living the good life.
After the article came out I received quite a lot of correspondence. One person wrote me and asked for a very large loan at 3% interest for ten years and he quoted numerous Bible verses concerning giving and helping our fellow man. After reviewing his correspondence I am convinced that this “Christian” is looking for a handout and not a solution to his problems. Similar to the guy on the street asking for money. Tell the next one that you encounter that you will not give them money but you will give them a job cleaning your yard for the day and they can earn some money and observe the look on their face. That is not the solution that they are looking for in many cases.
I am involved with many philanthropic endeavors and I fully realize that there are people in need of help everywhere and I help as many as I can; however I am of the opinion that I am a trusted steward of the resources that the Lord has entrusted to me. It is my fiduciary responsibility to ensure that His money is spent wisely and not squandered. I will happily help others when I can, but I want them to actively be trying to help themselves as well. Many liberal thinking people believe that the United States should provide a handout to anyone who is down and out. The Bible states that if someone will not work that they shall not eat. It makes exceptions for special circumstance like widows and those with infirmities stating that whoever shuts his ears to the cry of the poor will not be heard themselves; however unequivocally the Bible is not sympathetic to those who are lazy. Don’t reward the lazy, but have a soft heart for the poor
Proverbs 10:4
He who has a slack hand
becomes poor,
But the hand of the diligent
makes rich.
Work don’t worry
