Two modern day inventions have been sources of both tremendous angst and tremendous happiness in my life. One invention has sorely tested my marriage and patience and has pushed me to the limit of actually contemplating strangling my wife. That invention would be the garbage disposal. This horrible machine emits extremely loud grinding noises equivalent to a jet flying ten feet over my house in full throttle. It successfully blots out anything and everything I want to hear, no matter how important, such as the football scores on Sports Center, or the Nightly News.
I do not watch much television but when I do, I want to “hear” it as well as to view it. My wife of course is insensitive to this and times her usage of this demonic invention to coincide with my limited watching of TV. As with the ATT commercial that portrays losing a phone connection at a critical time, she turns it on at the most critical time of the broadcast and leaves it on until what I wanted to hear has passed.
I have accused her of timing it that way, but she is of course oblivious to my pleas. I have also repeatedly made the point that it could not be good for a septic or sewer system to have raw food go into it. I am convinced that there are untold trillions of germs being fed raw food daily from this device and called to dinner every night by the mother of all dinner bells. I am sure that at the very time these words are being written that millions of them are swimming right up through the drain to crawl up the sink and contaminate my entire home. It is disgusting to think about it.
These valid arguments and others are all to no avail as she is not going to merely throw the food away in a garbage can to be hauled away every Thursday like the rest of the world, she is going to clear the dishes and dispose of the food through her noisy garbage disposal and time this to occur on the rare occasions that I watch TV and that is all there is to it.
And then along comes TiVo; Praise the Lord! This is the most innovative recording device for television to ever come along. Oh yeah! This clever invention will automatically record whatever one is watching on TV and with a touch of a button instantly play it back. It will record anytime you want it to with ease, and can even record two shows at once. Sadistic wives are defeated at their cruel garbage disposal games as no football score can ever be lost, nor is any commentary from any news broadcast, or importantly not a single word will be lost from a Seinfeld rerun. In fact I can actually leave the room and when my wife tires of making noise, I can come back hit rewind and then watch my important programs in complete peace and quiet. Ahhhhhh.
Fortunately for King Solomon and King David, they did not have to deal with garbage disposals, and as a consequence there are no wise proverbs or Psalms that are written to comfort me concerning the invention of the garbage disposal. I did happen to think about TiVo and how it might be covered in the Bible though, and this concept has been around for eternity and much commentary exists in the Bible concerning God’s TiVo system. God has carefully recorded everything we have ever done, including every conversation, (such as screaming obscenities at one’s mate for ruining their television show), and He will replay it for all to see during judgment. Hmmm I’m not too enamored with that idea.
When you dance do you dance like God was watching you? Do you conduct business on a daily basis as though Jesus was watching you? Do you tell jokes that you would want to be replayed in front of God? When you surf the Internet do you do so like God was watching you? God even records our thoughts. When you see a scantily clad beautiful person, do you lust? Do you covet? It is all being recorded and that can be good or that can be bad. He also sees us helping others who are less fortunate; witnessing to others about His Son; obeying Him when we tithe; resisting temptation, and just saying no, and trying our utmost to obey His every command.
Thank God for Jesus Christ and His forgiving grace! I cannot imagine anyone relishing the idea of God replaying our lives and revealing all of the sins that we have committed including those that occurred long ago and we have perhaps even forgotten about. God sees it all, hears, it all, and even listens to our thoughts. It is all recorded and will be made available at judgment to either convict us as a prelude to being sentenced to everlasting separation from God in hell, or completely blotted out and “remembered no more” when it is covered by the blood of Christ which enables us to enter into His holy presence and heaven.
Even if you are a Christian, until that wonderful day, dance like God is watching you. There will be a judgment for God’s elect’ too. Thanks to Jesus Christ we are saved from Hell, but our judgment will determine our eternal rewards which will, (I believe), serve to either provide for greater or less enjoyment of eternity. This is tremendous incentive to do the right thing.
Rev 20:11
Then I saw a great white throne
and Him who sat on it, from whose
face the earth and the heaven fled
away. And there was found no place
for them.
And I saw the dead, small and
great, standing before God, and
books were opened. And another
book was opened, which is the
Book of Life. And the dead were
judged according to their works, by
the things which were written in the
books.
The sea gave up the dead who
were in it, and death and Hades
delivered up the dead who were in
them. And they were judged, each
one according to his works.
Then death and Hades were
cast into the lake of fire. This is
the second death.
And anyone not found written
in the Book of Life was cast into the
lake of fire.
Dance like God is watching you
