I was fortunate enough to spend some quality time with my grandchildren on vacation last week. The twins are really funny when it comes to eating. They wake up each morning and first thing simply “must” have a bottle of milk. Right before they are laid down each night after a big day of fun, they simply “must” have a bottle of milk. If their mama or daddy dallies just a little bit too long in getting that bottle of warmed milk into their grasping little hands they let them know it. As soon as they get the bottle they lay back and groove.

This sight reminds me of a verse in the Bible that describes how we should desire the word of God. Like newborn babies desiring pure milk, we should desire to hear and read God’s pure word and the Bible states that like newborn babies we grow thereby.

The Bible never ceases to amaze me as to its simple yet powerful descriptors; I wish I could write like that. Everything we need to grow is in the Bible, (just like everything a newborn needs to grow is in milk). It might be easy to overlook this little verse, but yet it jumps out at me and has meaning. If I did not read and study the Bible I might miss it altogether.

How about you? Do you even have a Bible or know where your Bible is? Do you study it daily? Newborn babes eat milk often; do you read the Bible often? Do you scream bloody murder if someone takes your Bible away from you or if you do not receive it on a regular basis? If you regularly read God’s word, good for you; the Bible states that you will receive what you need to grow from it. If not, well just the opposite is true. We cannot grow in our relationship with the Lord if our spirit is devoid of His word and that will not be healthy for us.

Make a pledge to read the Bible in its entirety this year, why don’t you? If that is too agressive for your liking, then pick out a time to routinely read the verses and chapters of your choice and “just do it”. Remember the Bible is God’s chosen way to teach us and communicate back to us. According to the Bible it is “living” and “powerful” and “sharper than any two edged sword” that can pierce all of the way to your inner soul…

1 Peter 2:2
As newborn babes, desire the
pure milk of the word, that you
may grow thereby.
If indeed you have tasted that
the Lord is gracious.
