Solomon had one thousand wives and in addition concubines. He wrote the Song of Solomon which is a beautiful treatise on spousal love. I once suffered through several weeks of preaching on this little book by the great pastor Jerry Vines. It is not my cup of tea, but some of you may enjoy it especially if you are into “luvvy-duvvy” love stories.

I prefer some of his Proverbs that deal with the practicalities of dealing with wives and he wrote several Proverbs about that subject and I assume if anyone would know how to do so, he would. One that comes to mind is: “Better to dwell in the wilderness than with an angry and contentious woman”. Or how about? “A continual dripping on a very rainy day and a contentious woman are alike; whoever restrains her restrains the wind and grasps oil with his right hand”. Or, “Better to dwell in a corner of a housetop than in a house shared with a contentious woman”.

I’m on a roll. Actually I think I will stop now. I do not want any angry feminist letters calling me a chauvinist today please, I am still recovering from my illness. The truth is I dislike dealing with contentious women as much as Solomon did. My wife is not contentious too often, but when she is in one of those rare moods, I head for the “wilderness” at my first opportunity. Generally when I return she is back to normal. In the end finding a wife is a good thing, and according to the Bible is the result of finding favor from God.

Proverbs 18:22
He who finds a wife finds a
good thing.
And obtains favor from the
Lord.
