I have been wondering of late why it is that we Christians worship God on Sunday and the Jewish faith worships on Saturday. We both worship the same God, the difference of course is that Christians know that Jesus is the Messiah and the Jews think the Messiah is yet to come. I researched it and found that indeed Jesus is the reason. Christians exchanged the Sabbath as the primary day of worship for the first day of the week, the day of Christ’s victory over the grave. This change in the major day of assembly and worship authorized by the Apostles serves as a major distinction between old Judaism and new Christianity.

The Bible is clear that the first day of the week, (Sunday), is the day that should be set aside to assemble together and worship God. The fourth commandment commands that we should “Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy”. Alas few people in the United states follow this commandment and Sunday is not generally considered a holy day by very many people. The Bible states that the Sabbath should also be a day of rest. Unfortunately when some folks observe it as a day of rest, they are in reality sleeping off a hangover.

Some folks think that God is no longer serious about this Sabbath command, yet the Bible is clear that God is the same today, as yesterday, as He will be one thousand years from now. He does not change, nor do His commands; His laws are axioms and will never change. The command concerning the tithe is the same too and people ignore it just as they do the commands concerning the Sabbath. The Bible clearly states that we should give a minimum of one tenth of our wages to the Lord. Anything less is robbing God. The statistics concerning the low number of people who actually tithe are pathetic.

I suppose if we look at the Sabbath from God’s point of view, He gives us seven days and only asks for one to be set aside for worship and to give thanks for what He is and does for us and for rest for our bodies to prepare us for the upcoming week. I assume that God in His infinite wisdom realizes that we are in need of this day of worship and rest; after all He designed our being. If we defy this command we shall pay the consequence as we always do whenever we sin.

He blesses us with “all” of our money but only expects one tenth back to help support His work and workers who feed us our spiritual diet. Further He promises additional blessings if we obey this particular command. We cannot out-give God; His returns always far surpass our outflow to him and I can personally attest to that fact. Again a violation of this command deprives us of those blessings that God desires to send our way.

I know and you should know that God is keenly aware of what we do on the Sabbath and where we are in our giving. Don’t disappoint your Savior this weekend. Obey your holy Father and go to church this Sunday, put a minimum of one-tenth of your earnings into the offering plate, and when you get home from church rest, meditate, and say some prayers. See for yourself how these simple instructions will make your life so much better and like a healing balm will prepare you for the next six days of facing the world and all of its trials and tribulations. It is called “peace” and it comes from our Savior

John 20:19
Then the same day of the evening,
being the first day of the week, when
the doors were shut where the disciples
were assembled, for fear of
the Jews, Jesus came and stood in
the midst, and said to them, “Peace
be with you.”
