I attended a luncheon the other day and saw a man I had not seen in nearly fifteen years. When I knew him he was married and had two beautiful kids, but he was having a torrid affair with a beautiful young girl. He was at the luncheon with the gal with whom he had the affair and I assume that they are now married as he would not have brought her to a meeting among a prestigious group of business leaders as his mistress. I wonder what happened to his wife and kids.
I will tell you the mistress ain’t what she used to be. She was no longer slim and beautiful; instead she had porked’ up considerably and was wearing enough makeup to qualify for a position as a rodeo clown. She looked old and so did he. In fact the word I would say describes them best is tired”. This guy worked out in the same fitness center that I worked out in and although not a friend, I knew him pretty well back in the day. I worked out early-early and our group was known as the ‘morning crew’.
It was amazing the lengths he would go through to meet up with this gal whenever and wherever they could. She was married too and by all indications was just as hot on the trail for this guy as he was for her. I saw them together all over town including when I rode by a local motel. The odd thing about this romance was that the two of them thought no-one knew they were having an affair. Huh? It was so obvious a blind person could have seen. Everyone I knew talked about it around the water cooler and wherever.
For some reason this situation reminds me of a couple of verses in Proverbs, (below). He had a beautiful wife and kids. His business was booming and he literally had it made, and yet it was not enough. He had to keep looking for more and more. Unfortunately he will never find it apart from God; I hope he has discovered that in spite of his past mistakes. Unfortunately the beauty he so persistently chased has faded as will the riches and material possessions he prized be stripped away too. They are only temporal and soon destined to belong to someone else, (maybe his ex-wife and kids). Righteousness however withstands all of eternity.
Proverbs 27:19
As in water face relects face, so
a man’s heart reveals the man.
Hell and Destruction are never
full; so the eyes of man are never
satisfied.
The refining pot is for silver and
the furnace for gold, and a man is
valued by what others say of him.
