I visited a church Sunday with some folks that I was visiting out of town. The preacher preached the absolute worst message that I have ever heard. It was disjointed and rambling and I actually never did figure out what the subject or theme was. Rarely do I attend church and listen to a message without getting’ something’ out of it, be it an idea for WFTD or some new point I have never thought of or researched, but this was awful and I did not get anything out of it.
I wondered if it was me, but I looked at the person that I came with and he could barely keep his eyes from closing as he fought to keep from going to sleep during the sermon. It was a really bad sermon and I literally could not wait for it to end. After church I could not help but mention it. The people I went with agreed that this preacher was bad and indeed they had never heard him preach a good sermon. I did not ask, but I cannot help but wonder why they continue to attend this church. I would do one of two things; I would find out if others felt the same as I did about this guy and if so get a vote going to send him on his way. If others enjoyed his sermons and were content with them, I would leave and find another church where the preaching was better and more suited to my needs.
I have a friend in the Keys that experiences the same thing with the Episcopal Church that he attends. He told me that it was boring as *#$*. He attended the little church I belong to and told me he really enjoyed it, but he had been going to the other church so long that he did not see how he could change. He wondered aloud what people would think.
We should be attending church to worship the Lord and to learn more about Him and His word. Yes we should have good fellowship and join with other like-minded people and draw strength from them, but God should be the primary factor not the people. If you are not happy in your current church, then by all means visit some more churches until you find the one that is right for you. As much as I love going to church on Sunday, if my only choice was the church I attended Sunday, I would stay home. Fortunately there are churches on practically every corner in the good old USA. Find a good one with preaching that is invigorating and interesting and then get involved and do your part. Don’t attend week after week getting nothing out of it, but being seen by the right’ people.
It is important to finding peace in life to find a church that you get something out of and that you will want to attend week after week with enthusiasm. There are many choices in churches because everyone is different. Some like it quiet and dignified and others want to rock the walls. I once had a friend that attended a Pentecostal church. I jokingly referred to him as a holy roller’. He smiled his big wide smile at me with a twinkle in his eyes completely unfazed and said, “That’s right and one day I’m going to roll all over heaven”. My wife and I attended church with him and people were yelling and dancing in the aisles and talking in tongues and waving their hands about. I was completely unnerved and wondering where I would go when the snakes came out. (None did, but it was a wild experience). If that is the way you enjoy worshiping your God and it is right for you, then I say go for it. If you want sophistication and quiet I’m sure you can find it as well as a happy medium. The main thing is to seek God and find a place where the BIBLE is taught without variation. Do so and you will find Him and in so doing find peace that surpasses human understanding…
Psalm 53:2
God looks down from heaven
upon the children of men,
To see if there are any who
understand, who seek God.
