As I talk to people about God I always come away with the impression that many have not really given God much thought. I find this amazing as literally nothing is as important to our existence. It seems that many are more concerned about what to wear in the morning or what to cook for dinner, or the possibility of getting a raise or promotion at work.

The Bible states that the beginning of wisdom is the fear of the Lord. We are told more than once in the Bible to fear God. I suggest you get a Bible and go to the index and read the passages that have to do with fear of the Lord. There are many of them so it might take a while. Why do you suppose that God repeatedly instructs us to fear Him?

One partial explanation is found in one of the passages in Matthew. It tells us not to fear those who can kill the body but not the soul. But fear God who is able to destroy both soul and body in Hell. This sobering thought is the crucial reason that I believe God instructs us to fear Him. Yes He is a God of love. Yes He does not want anyone to perish and suffer in Hell. But God is holy and righteous and cannot tolerate sin and without the blood sacrifice of Jesus Christ who died a substuitionary death for those of us who worship Him, He will judge and will not hesitate to administer His just’ punishment and send those found guilty of rejecting His Son to a place of everlasting torment where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth’.

The Bible instructs us to think of our impending deaths often. Now why do you suppose God tells us that? I believe that most people do not spend much time thinking about God because they do not think much about the possibility of their own death as being imminent. Now let someone get deathly sick or face terrible danger and people flock to churches. The terrorists’ attack of 9/11 is an example of that. Aside from times like that however, most people do not think of death often and indeed think it is a ghoulish subject.

Ghoulish or not the Bible instructs us to think about it often. How about right now? Imagine that today is your last day on this earth and you will die today. Let your mind wander if you will. You are probably thinking of loved ones and how they will take it. What will you look like in your open casket? Will very many people attend your funeral? Will many people send flowers? You might wonder what caused your death. STOP!

Think about your judgment! Are you ready to face eternity today or not?

John 3:16
For God so loved the world
that He gave His only begotten Son
that whosoever believes in Him should
not perish but have everlasting life.
For God did not send His Son
to condemn the world
but that the world through Him
might be saved.
He who believes in Him is not
condemned; but he who does not believe
is condemned already, because
he has not believed in the name of
the only begotten Son of God.
