An executive friend of mind recently sent me a book entitled “Halftime”.
It is an excellent book about a television executive who became very successful and later began searching his soul to develop some interesting conclusions as to how he should spend the remainder of his life. The title of the book suggests that life can be compared to a sporting event such as a football game and by the time one reaches their early forties that they are halfway through their life, (halftime), and most games are won or lost in the second half. Hmmm I’m 58. I guess that means I am in the final quarter. Hmmm that does not sound good, or does it.
The Bible tells us to be ready at all times for we do not know when we will meet the Lord either via the Rapture, or if we unexpectedly depart this earth a little early with an untimely death. We should eagerly anticipate our next phase of slipping from the “seen” world into the “unseen”, provided we are Christians, for “to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord”; however we only are given one opportunity to live a life on this earth and what a shame to waste it.
To those of you who think it is ghastly to think about death I might remind you that the Bible clearly states that we should think about our own demise often. Why? I think it helps us to focus on the fact that we were put here for a purpose; God’s purpose. How many of us would concentrate 100% of our time on attending concerts, camping, fishing, business, soccer games or whatever if we knew we would meet our maker at 10:00 tomorrow morning and life on this planet would be gone and we would face our Maker sooner rather than later. Time is passing me by at an alarming rate. There is so much I want to accomplish with my life and yet I realize that there just is not enough time left for me to do it.
Live your life as if every day might be your last is what the Lord is telling us. Don’t waste a precious day. I can personally relate as I enter into the final period of my life and see my hair turning gray and eyesight growing weak. I have far less time left on this earth than I have already spent. This is a sobering thought and it makes me want to spend my time wisely. It makes me want to reflect as to God’s purpose for my life and what I can do with the remainder of my life to try and accomplish it. How about you? Got anything planned for today that is devoted to God’s purpose for your life? Are you ready?
Matt. 25:13
Watch therefore, for you know
neither the day not the hour in
which the Son of Man is coming.
