I was trying to lead someone to Christ recently and their objection was that they had a hard time understanding how someone could be forgiven just for asking for forgiveness. I told them that repentance of one’s sins was also in the mix, but what many people do not understand is that it is not what “we” do, but what “Christ” did on the cross that saves us from our sins. The Bible teaches that sin must be punished. Christ took the punishment for all of the sins in the world when he was crucified, put to death and arose from the grave. He led a perfect life and was a perfect sacrifice providing atonement for the sins of all who of their own free unashamedly decide to accept Him as their Savior, repent of their sins, and follow Him. What really gets to this person is how someone who has committed a heinous act or acts could be forgiven “just for the asking”. I told this person that grace is difficult to understand just like the song Amazing Grace; many things about God are a mystery and will remain so. God is love. He wants us to love each other as He loves us. We want and eye for an eye, but He wants us to forgive.
It is the Christian way which is God’s way.
I led a wicked life for the first twenty four years of my life. I did some things for which I have a very hard time forgiving MYSELF, much less expecting forgiveness from others and especially from a holy God who abhors sin. I accepted Christ as my Savior and became a Christian and my sins were washed away white as snow. I for one am extremely glad that God forgave me as a result of what His Son did on the cross and He “remembers my sins no more” and the precious blood of my Savior covers every sin I ever committed or will commit. It is as if they never happened. I do not understand the loving grace of God. It is difficult to understand how God can forgive someone who deserves to die. According to the Bible every human being who ever lived aside from Jesus Christ falls into that category as all have sinned and fallen short in the eyes of the Lord and His royal laws of sinless perfection.
We have many examples of forgiveness for those who committed heinous acts including King David who committed adultery with Bathsheba and then had her husband murdered. There were definitely consequences to his sins and even his own child pursued him and tried to kill him, but God forgave him and we can be assured he is in heaven today. Paul was responsible for the persecution and including the deaths of early Christians including Stephen who was martyred by being stoned to death.
Paul became an apostle of Jesus and perhaps is responsible for leading more people to Christ than anyone else who ever lived. God can transform anyone who trusts in Him. He transformed me, and millions of others and He can transform you. He stands at the door and knocks on the door of your heart, just waiting for you to come in. Won’t you do so now and then go to church and make it public this Easter Sunday by getting Baptized? Because if you do not accept Christ as your Savior, you will miss out on the loving grace of our Father and will be eternally separated from God and cast into outer darkness, a place called Hell. Jesus made the ultimate sacrifice and through Him and His act of loving grace is the ONLY way that we can ever approach God again.
God is going to judge us all when we die and face Him, and if one does not have the atoning blood of Jesus Christ covering their sins, they will be sentenced to everlasting punishment for rejecting the sacrifice made by the loving Son of God Himself…
John 14:6
Jesus said to him, “I am the way,
the truth, and the life. No one
comes to the Father except through
Me.”
