Some people refuse to fly commercial airlines. Logic like the safety records of airlines and the incredible number of flights vs. the few crashes are lost on people who think this way. Lightening strikes, snake bites, pit bull attacks, being stomped to death by a herd of elephants are just as likely to be our end as a plane crash, but there are those like John Madden who will drive 18 hours cross country to cover football games week after week because of his unreasonable fear of flying.

Those who feel this way in all probability do so because they want to be in control. They should really be panic stricken, because no one is in control of their destiny. There is no guarantee that the air that we breathe will be there five minutes from now or that our heart will continue to function. We are held in the palm of God’s hand and serve at His leisure. The next breath that we take may be our last and there is nothing we can do about it. Does this thought panic you? It shouldn’t, because our Father in heaven is in control and He will take care of us for eternity, provided we have accepted His Son Jesus as our Savior.

Put your trust in God. The Bible tells us that a time and a place were appointed for each of us to die long before we were ever born. Nothing will change that appointment. “Unreasonable” fears for our lives, I believe, are signs of wavering faith in God. We should not live our lives in fear and dread, rather in faith and optimism. God will call us home at the best possible time for HIS purpose and we should eagerly look forward to meeting Him at the pearly gates of heaven when He does; not dread it…Lot’s wife is a good example for all of us to remember.
When God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, He gave them strict instructions not to look back when they departed. Lot’s wife could not resist the urge to look back and instantly became a pillar of salt. We should yearn for our God and keep our eyes on Him not the temporal world and the evil within it.

Psalm 39:4
Lord remind me how brief my time on
earth will be. Remind me that my days are numbered, and that my life is fleeing away.

How well do you know the Bible?
Jesus was asked why Moses allowed divorce certificates to be issued.
What was His answer?
Matt. 19:3-9
