I had a conversation with someone recently who I caught in a lie. This individual stated that the lie that was told to me is the only lie he ever told to me. Unfortunately I doubt that this is a true statement and told him so. The problem with lying is that if someone tells a lie and subsequently gets caught in it, as so often happens, from then on everything they say is suspect. You can tell a lie once and the truth 99 times, but after getting caught in a lie, a question always remains as to whether or not the person is telling the truth this time or not.

Those who have small children should think long and hard about how to train them. When bringing my kids up, I made a list of things that I wanted to teach them and then prioritized it according to importance. (Sound familiar?) Teaching them about Jesus was first, but telling the truth, ALWAYS, was number two on the list. I was determined to raise children who were honest and truthful. I told them that no matter how bad a situation might be that lying would only make it worse. They might get the tar beat out of them for doing something bad, but they would get the tar, feathers, and snot beat out of them if they made it worse by trying to lie their way out of it. I can say that I am very proud that this lesson appears to have sunk in on both of my sons, as they are both honest and truthful. They have had times in both of their lives where they could have attempted to try and lie their way out of trouble. Instead, even though they knew there would be a consequence for their action, they have always admitted to making the mistake, rather than try to lie their way out of it. To the best of my knowledge and memory, to this day I have never caught either one of them in an outright lie.

I learned this from my father. The thing I admire the most about my father is his honesty. He has a reputation around his community of being honest and having integrity. He would never lie and he is totally honest. If he found a wallet full of money, he would return it and not even consider not returning it. I admire that more than any trait in a person and consider it an essential ingredient when forming any kind of relationship, business or personal.

According to the Bible lies originated with satan. He told the first lie to Eve in the Garden and has been encouraging people to follow his lead ever since. Lying is satanic. The Bible states in Titus 1:2 that God cannot lie. We all need to think about that. Im sure that most everyone has told white lies. They are in reality black lies. I cannot say that I never told a lie and I doubt anyone can. Hopefully you have deep regrets for your past mistakes as I do, and as you look to the future that is one mistake that is not repeated.

Tell the truth. If you screw up in the heat of the moment and try to lie your way out of a situation, remedy the situation as fast as possible by going to them and admitting what you have done. No one wants to be around a liar. No one can trust a liar. God has many descriptions in the Bible, one is truth. Think about it…

John 4:24

God is Spirit, and those who worship

Him must worship in spirit and truth.

How well do you know the Bible?

Satan offered up the first lie. What did he say?

Gen.3:4
