Most everyone thinks of this time of year as a time to be with family and to celebrate Thanksgiving and to prepare for Christmas and New Years holidays which are fast approaching. I also think of this time of year to reflect back on what has been accomplished this past year, and to lay out my goals for next year. It is a shame that more people do not have definitive goals in writing that they try to achieve. I attribute most of my success to my ability to set and achieve goals. When I set goals, I set them for practically everything. Spiritual goals are first on the list followed by business and personal goals. When I was young I referred to them and worked them vigorously daily; as I approach the twilight, I am not as aggressive but even now they are like an old friend. Goals help keep me on track. My mind will wander with the times and current events, but goals remain steadfast throughout the year.
God wants us to achieve the utmost during our tenure in this world and goals will help us define our utmost and plan our journey. Did you achieve your utmost this past year? Is your spiritual life what it ought to be? Did you make progress in other areas? How about your health? Are you exercising, eating right and taking care of your body and watching your weight? Is your family life what it ought to be? Is your career what it ought to be? Do you have any friends? Did you improve any of your weaknesses? Did you share freely your material wealth with those in need last year? I doubt if anyone can honestly say that last year they achieved their utmost; however if you cannot see definitive improvement at least in most areas, you have a problem and it should be addressed. Write down your goals in an organized fashion and systematically improve the areas that need improvement so next year you can reach this period of time and answer in the affirmative to most of the forgoing questions. (Hint, do not dwell on material things! Those come when the others are addressed.)
Set some goals during this special time where one year winds down and another gets ready to take off. Hopefully you will pray about it and ask God what He wants for your life. What is Gods plan for your life? You cannot achieve success unless you are in step with Him. We are to make all of the plans and expend the effort, but He is the one who helps guide us to making it happen.
Proverbs 16:9
A mans heart plans his way
But the lord directs his steps.
How well do you know the Bible?
The Bible makes it clear that at times as Christians our weaknesses are such that we do not even know what we should pray for as we ought. Who makes intercession and prays for us at those times?
Romans 8:26
