It is human to make mistakes. Sometimes in spite of our best efforts we are going to make a mistake. Mistakes have consequence. The more serious the mistake, the more serious the consequence. God realizes that we are human and that we are going to make mistakes on occasion.
He can and will forgive us however that does not always mean that we will escape the consequence of our actions. I have often equated sin to someone throwing a big rock at a fragile plate glass window. As soon as the rock leaves our hand we may regret throwing it, but it does not deter the rock from shattering the glass window. Sin can shatter lives in spite of how bad we feel about it after the fact. The consequence of our sin cannot always be avoided once it is set in motion. Mistakes can be costly. Ask any drunk driver who has killed an innocent driver.
Their tears cannot erase the tragic result of their mistake and often
there are severe consequences and the piper must be paid. I guess the
moral of the story is to first not make excuses and take 100% responsibility, then ask forgiveness wherever appropriate, (God and/or man), take measures to ensure that the same mistake is never made again, and then accept whatever consequence our mistake renders as the natural outcome of our own action.

God can and will forgive us our mistakes through His loving grace and His Son’s precious blood, provided we sincerely are repentant and accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. Our human counterparts may not be as forgiving regardless of our contrition. This realization always makes me marvel at just how amazing God’s grace really is! Imagine God sending His only precious, perfect Son to die a painful death, being nailed to a rugged cross, spat upon and brutally beaten and put to death in order to atone for the drunk driver who took an innocent life as well as every other sin that you, and I and the rest of mankind ever committed. We have all made mistakes/sinned and the consequence of our sin is living throughout eternity apart from God in Hell unless we ask God for forgiveness and accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior and repent of our sins. The consequence of doing this is heaven and being able to spend eternity with our loving, forgiving Father of grace.
