The Bible warns us to “take heed and beware” of coveting. What is coveting? The dictionary defines it two ways, “To feel envious desire for that which is another’s”, and “To wish for excessively and longingly”. God always chooses His words carefully in the Bible; therefore when we see “TAKE HEED”, we should take heed. When it states, “BEWARE”, we should beware.

A friend of mine and I were talking the other day and this guy is one of the hardest working people that I know. He earns exceedingly good money because of his hard work and quality craftsmanship and he is a miser.
He probably still has the first nickel he ever earned. I was kidding him about all of the money he has stashed away, and chided him about worshipping the dollar. The discussion continued and then he looked at me and said Bob I want to be serious for a moment. He then explained his long term goals. He just wants to help people. The money, the hard work, the saving, is all ultimately to be used one day towards helping people. He wants to use everything he has to minister to people and help them and to serve God the best he knows how.

We sometimes get too hung up on what “we” want and not what “God” wants.
Think about my friend. One day he will die and he will not be taking his large accumulation of money with him. He will, however, take all of his ministry of helping people with him. This treasure will be his to enjoy for eternity. We should look to the long term, not this present world as we make our plans. We cannot take the wealth of this world with us when we die, but we can fellowship with those in heaven whom we helped lead to the cross for the eons to come. I heard a song the other day in church that had lyrics something like, “After we have been there for ten thousand years, we will just be getting started”. My friend’s money will be long forgotten by then, but his ministry will still be alive and well and perhaps some of the people that he helped will be singing that tune in that heavenly choir.

Don’t covet, rather use your intellect to figure out how best to serve your Lord using His gifts to you in this life to full advantage.

Luke 12:15
And He said to them, “Take
heed and beware of covetousness,
for one’s life does not consist in the
abundance of the things he
possesses”.
