Yesterday prior to my morning workout, I stepped on the scale and my heart sank as I discovered that I had gained nearly ten pounds. My schedule has been quite hectic and lately I have missed a few workout days. Additionally I have gotten into the habit of having a piece of pie and coffee every night after dinner. I vowed to cut out the pie and exercised furiously. Yesterday I ate like a bird, determined to get back to my normal weight. This morning I weighed and I had gained another pound. NO WAY I screamed. It was then that I happened to notice a cloth tape measure that someone had hung on the balance beam of the scale. I quickly moved it and discovered that it was the culprit. The tape measure had been distorting the scale. My weight was the same that it is every day. I smiled as I thought about the resumption of coffee and pie.
Things are not always as they may appear. Often we assume the worst, only to discover this axiom. As my head continues to get more gray, I try to exercise more caution, particularly when interacting with others.
We should look before we leap. Don’t always assume the worse. Try to get both sides of the story before going off the deep end. If you are falsely accused, quietly set the record straight and watch as shame enters their countenance.

when they defame you as evildoers,
those who revile your good conduct
in Christ may be ashamed.
