As we approach Easter Sunday I am daily thinking of how the Lord had to suffer greatly on the cross in order to take the punishment for my wretched sins. I think of the whips that bit into his back as he was flogged. I think of the brutal Roman soldiers pounding their fists into His face. I think of the razor sharp crown of thorns that was pounded onto His head. I think of Him staggering under the burden of carrying the cross. I imagine how it must have hurt to have crude spikes hammered through His wrists and feet. I think of how thirsty He must have been as He hung on the cross. I think of how humiliating it had to be to be hung on the cross without His garments. I think of the jeering crowd that was cursing Him and spitting upon Him. I think of the Roman soldier shoving a spear in His side. I think of how it must have felt for His Father to turn away from Him as He mysteriously took all of the sickening hideous sins of the world upon Himself. Jesus Christ never committed one sin in His life, yet He took the punishment for all of it in order that we might be saved.

Forgiveness came at a great price. When I go to church this Sunday I will be envisioning the foregoing in my mind. It helps me to understand just how much God loves me in spite of all of my stupid flaws and shortcomings. I cannot understand it, but I am very grateful. Jesus Christ did not have to leave His heavenly throne to do this for us. He did it because He loves us. Sometimes when we face trials we may question God’s love for us, but a quick trip back down memory lane to this event that occurred some 2000 years ago can quickly confirm it. We have the easy job, all we have to do is believe and start living our lives for Him.
