There has been much talk of late about us living in the last days, and that soon God will bring about an end to wickedness. Many do not believe this will happen, even among those who profess to be Christians.
Perhaps some feel that if God is love (1 John 4:8) he wouldn’t destroy anyone. Or perhaps that since Christ died for us his sacrifice will cover all of our sins so no one will be destroyed. All we have to do is read the letter of Jude to see whether or not this is true.
Jude 4 tells us of certain ungodly men who “turn the undeserved kindness of our God into an excuse for loose conduct and proving false to our only Owner and Lord, Jesus Christ. He goes on to tell us in verses 5-7 of judgments rendered against Israel, even though he had just delivered them. Then there was the judgment against Sodom and Gomorrah. (As an interesting side note, I was watching a TV show this weekend on the History channel about Sodom and Gomorrah. The so called ‘experts’ were of course trying to give a scientific reason for the destruction of the cities. One of them said that the bible nowhere explicitly says they were destroyed for homosexuality or fornication. Rather they say it was destroyed for their not being hospitable. Jude 7 in no uncertain terms tells us they were destroyed for “fornication excessively and gone out after flesh for unnatural use”.)
God has shown that he will destroy people who brazenly defy his word.
But an entire world? Well, news flash people, he’s done it before.
Read the account of the flood recorded for us in Genesis chapters 6-8.
I’m sure most people are familiar with this story (hopefully not through the made for TV version of it a couple years ago where the ark had cannons). Many people dismiss it as myth. However, I have found a chart that I have copied below that lists 14 countries who have legends of a destruction of the world in ancient times of which only a few
survived. Pretty much every civilization has some sort of story like
this. They are remarkably similar. Obviously for so many civilizations to have a story so similar, something must have happened. Many of these legends have been embellished from the bible’s account, but they all have a common source that include God being angered by wickedness, destruction by deluge, a small number of survivors and coming to rest on a mountain.
For those of us who believe what the bible says, we do not need to rely on legends and myths to prove our faith in the bible. Still, I find things like this very interesting, and to be of use when I try and help others come to believe what the bible says also.
Here’s the chart. The X denotes that is an aspect of the legend for that civilization.

Rev. 19:15
Now out of His mouth goes a
sharp sword that with it He should
strike the nations. And He Himself
will rule them with a rod of iron.
He Himself treads the winepress of
the fierceness and wrath of Almighty
God.
