A friend and I were flying to Quebec Canada one time and we had a layover in La Guardia Airport in New York. For those of you who have never flown through this airport, it services many international flights and is one of the most crowded airports in the world. The jets that fly these international routes are huge, most are double deckers. My friend and I were waiting for our flight to arrive and were looking out the window at all of those jumbo jets marveling at their size. About this time a tiny propeller plane weaved its way through these huge planes and came to park right in front of our gate. The pilot emerged from the plane and I could not get over how much he looked like the actor Errol Flynn. He had on aviator sunglasses, hat pulled down over his unkempt, curly hair, and his tie had blown over his shoulder. He opened the cargo door and started to remove the luggage. I remarked to my friend that I had never seen a pilot unload and/or load luggage before. Just then an announcement came over the intercom that our plane was ready for boarding. Oh my God! You don’t mean…. Yes, this was our connecting flight to Montreal. “You have got to be kidding me”, I exclaimed, “I’m not getting on that plane.” It was almost comical looking, a tiny little plane sitting out there among all of those jumbo jets and the pilot, Errol Flynn, was now loading the luggage. We decided, reluctantly to go for it.

Before we got on the plane they asked us how much we weighed and then told us where to sit in order to balance the weight in the plane.
Imagine riding in this little plane through La Guardia airport. I felt like an ant among a herd of elephants. There was not a door on the cockpit and we could see the pilot’s every move. This was not good. We took off and I doubt if we ever got over 1000 feet. In fact I believe that he followed the highway up there. His sophisticated navigation equipment consisted of a piece of paper that was strung between two rollers. The pilot used his fingers to advance the paper to see the directions as we progressed through our trip. (At least I assume that it had the directions on it.) To make a long story short we made it to Montreal and, all things considered, it ended up being a very pleasant flight. The pilot jumped out and unloaded our luggage personally again.
I almost felt like tipping him.

I was thinking about this incident that occurred probably twenty years ago and it made me stop and think. There are several ways to get where we are going while in this old world, but only one way leads to everlasting life with God and that is via Jesus Christ. He is the only one who can safely escort you into the presence of our Father and Lord.
Unlike this little plane that could have gone down with Errol at the controls, we are perfectly safe with Jesus in control of our lives.
