The crash didn’t look that bad. I’m not a race fan, but I’ve seen far more spectacular crashes on various news clips where the driver walked away without a scratch; however this seemingly minor crash took Dale Earnhart’s life. And just like that he was gone…. Right? No, he has just passed into eternity. Dale Earnhart is alive today and he is either in heaven or hell. The $41 million dollars he earned, the hundreds of thousands of friends and fans, and the many accomplishments of his life are no longer important to Dale Earnhart. When he crashed into that wall the only thing important was whether or not he had accepted Christ as the only living Son of God who died on a cross for his sins and was resurrected. If he took that step, he is safely in heaven and will be there in paradise with Jesus for eternity. If he had not taken that step, he is in hell, eternally separated from God forever and ever.

We never know when our number is up. I nearly had a car crash yesterday when a drunk came over two lanes and narrowly missed slamming into our car. At the rate of speed we were driving it could have all been over for us, (particularly me because it was on my side). Just that quick I would pass from this life into the next. Just as Dale Earnhart and countless others do each day, I would be on my knees facing an awesome, Holy God who cannot tolerate sin, ANY sin. In that moment either the blood of Jesus Christ will cover our sins and we will be welcomed with open arms with all sins forgiven, or we will stand on our own and listen as God judges us, finds us guilty, and tells us to depart from Him for rejecting His only Son.

I don’t know about you, but I want Jesus standing their as my advocate on that day. My prayer is that Dale Earnhart had Jesus on his side and he is currently strolling around heaven enjoying the scene.

And as it is appointed for men
to die once, but after this the
judgment,
so Christ was offered once to
bear the sins of many.
