Honey Lake looks like a big cup of steaming coffee this morning. The warmer water of the lake meets the crisp fall air and mist shrouds the lake like a veil. Every year during this season this phenomenon occurs and every time I see it I think of the brevity of life and how quickly time is running out.
Yesterday I had several disheartening incidents occur. The day began well, but ended up lousy. As I think about it today I know that those problems don’t amount to a hill of beans in the big scheme of things.
The sun is coming up; the world is slowly turning on its axis; kids are getting ready for school; business people are preparing for one final effort this week to accomplish their goals and most everyone eagerly anticipates the weekend. Nothing has changed. I don’t imagine things will be different tomorrow either.
This life is full of disappointments and while it is true that some days are remarkably better than others, it is also true that we earnestly yearn for a better life. 2 Cor. 5:2 – We grow weary in our present bodies, and we long to put on our heavenly bodies like new clothing.
C. S. Lewis put it this way: I have found a desire within myself that no experience in this world can satisfy; the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world.
He also asked the question: “Has this world been so kind to you that you should leave with regret? There are better things ahead than any we leave behind.”
When I’m called home to be with the Lord I hope that I shall leave with no regrets. My fear is that I will not have done enough to witness to those who need to hear. I look forward to the better things ahead, but I realize that this little stint on earth is vitally important to us all. I’m determined to do as Charles Spurgeon once said: “If sinners be damned, at least let them leap to Hell over our dead bodies. And if they perish, let them perish with our arms wrapped about their knees, imploring them to stay. If Hell must be filled, let it be filled in the teeth of our exertions, and let not one go unwarned and unprayed for.”
This life is indeed brief, but eternity is forever. I know that there are people all over the world that do not know Jesus as their Savior and it grieves me to think of them spending eternity in hell, separated from God. Though my time on this little blue marble hung in space is brief, I wish to spend every remaining day working towards planting seeds of the Gospel to anyone who will listen. Jesus will wipe away any tears I may have soon enough.
I pray that each of you develop a burning desire to share the Gospel with the lost. This is my day of quotes, but Charles Spurgeon said it far better than I. “Have you no wish for others to be saved? Then you’re not saved yourself, be sure of that!”
Have a great weekend and go to Honey Lake Church or somewhere on Sunday.
Romans 15:13
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
