Just a comma…

One thing that we should keep in mind is that death is not a period in our lives; it is but a comma. Did you know that 3 people die every second, or another way of looking at it is 180 people die every minute?

If you want to carry that out further, it is 260,000 per day, 95,000,000 per year. Several people will die by the time you finish reading this. The Bible is very clear in promising two things in our lives, death and after that God’s judgment.

We are not promised a happy marriage, children, happiness, fortune, or fame. If you have all/any of those things, you can be thankful and enjoy them as long as they last. Keep in mind though; death will come to us all and those earthly things will be stripped from us. After our death we will be judged. Then what? We will enter heaven or hell for eternity.

It is hard for many people to envision their own death. I have faced it many times and indeed came to the very brink after a horrific automobile accident. The older I get the more funerals I attend. My mother, my father, my only brother, and all of my grandparents have all entered into the valley, as have more relatives, in-laws, friends and acquaintances than I can remember. All have faced God.

The Bible teaches in more than one place that we should think about this subject often. Why would you think God wants us to think of our impending deaths? This is after all a grisly subject to most of us. It helps put perspective in what is really important in our lives. We should prioritize our lives accordingly. Your career will pass away, as will your shiny new automobile, so will the house that you love. There will be no need for any of those things in the next life. Those who have not accepted Jesus will not be allowed in heaven. Our Lord and Savior will welcome those who have accepted Him. The treasures that you will have waiting for you in heaven will be directly proportional to what you have done for the Lord in this life. In reality it is the only thing that you can take with you.

When you think about it, if we are smart, we will concentrate our efforts towards the next life not this temporary one. It will be here before you know it . . . One thousand and one . . . One thousand and two . . . One thousand and three . . .
