Yesterday we began burning off the underbrush at Honey Lake. It is done every spring and the controlled burn removes undesirable bushes and weeds and makes room for the desirable species. I love the smell of the smoke and seeing the flames consuming acre after acre of land. Most of all I like to see the charred ground begin bringing forth new growth. One day it is black and bleak looking and before you know it Honey Lake Plantation will begin sprouting up lush native grasses and wildflowers that are simply gorgeous.
Later on today I will make the drive to Jacksonville and take my wife to Mayo Clinic to prepare for breast cancer surgery on Thursday. I have finally reached a point whereby my own pain is almost completely gone and I can drive. Aside from the seven inch scar on my neck, some numbness in my right arm and hand, as well as being exceedingly tired, one would never know that I’d just undergone major surgery.
Our ordeal reminds me of the burning process. We undergo the fire and when it is over we can put it aside and move on with life and soon the flames are forgotten as we enjoy the freshness that replaces them. While the fire rages however, it is difficult to think of anything else.
Approximately 2000 years ago Jesus endured the refining fire of hell on our behalves. Millions from all over the world will celebrate His triumph on the cross over sin and death this week. Those who love Him and follow Him will enjoy the freshness of His victory forever; those who do not will endure their own flames throughout eternity.
I hope you will attend church this Easter Sunday. It isn’t about Easter eggs hunts and fresh new Easter sun dresses; it’s about new beginnings made possible by Jesus enduring the flames of wrath on our behalves for no other reason than He loves us. It is called grace and there is no other way to enter into the freshness than His sacrifice on our behalves. Praise His Holy name above all names this week and every week.
Amen!
Hebrews 12:2
We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne.
