Not so smart after all

My son told me tonight that the world’s smartest man (who according to him is Stephen Hawkins) recently stated that there is no God. The Bible says in Psalms 53:1 – The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” I told him that perhaps Stephen Hawkins isn’t so smart after all.

The world’s smartest men thought the world was flat; a man named Christopher Columbus proved that one wrong; they said that flying faster than the speed of sound was impossible and would in fact disintegrate a plane; a test pilot named Chuck Yeager debunked that one; we were told that running a four minute mile was impossible; this was first achieved in 1954 by Roger Bannister in 3:59.4. In the last 50 years the mile record has been lowered by almost 17 seconds.

Yawn… All of these pseudo intellectuals have one thing in common, they are sure of their hypotheses, (along with their many admirers) right up until the last dog dies and it explodes right in their faces. The problem is that so-o-o-o many people believe them.

I believe the Bible and the Bible states that there is a God. One thing that gives me confidence in the Bible is that unlike all of these smart men, it has withstood the test of time. The Bible was written in ancient times and was understood by the uneducated superstitious ancient civilizations of that day and yet today as we send people into outer space and have super computers, it is the best-selling book in the world, the Ten Commandments stand taller than ever (even if our “really smart” people think it is a bad thing to display them in public), and no one can disprove it.

When I visited Israel, I actually saw some of the Dead Sea Scrolls and other early documents that formed several of the books in the Bible. They don’t look like much displayed in a glass case; just some old parchment with words that were painstakingly handwritten in ink (there were no printing presses or Microsoft Word programs back then).

Those words within it are “living and active” according to the Bible, and every letter and every syllable within it was divinely inspired by God Himself. It is His unerring word. It says of itself in Matt. 5:18 – “I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished”.

Isaiah 40:8 – The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands forever.”

Jesus said in Matt. 24:25 – “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.”

Literally this means all that is written will be fulfilled before “heaven and earth pass” away, (as they will, with a “great noise and fervent heat”). Yep the glorious heavens which we all see and admire, and this beautiful earth which we inhabit and love, (including gorgeous Honey lake), shall pass away for the things which are seen are temporal, they are here but for a season and then will be gone. The things which are not seen are eternal and will last forever, 2 Cor. 4:18 – “So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”

Hmmm… We are told as Christians to look forward to these events with great anticipation and not fear or dread. Jesus has promised that He will be with us until the end of time as we understand it, and beyond that throughout eternity. I pray that Mr. Hawkins and those he has deceived with his earthly “wisdom” finds that truth before he dies and faces almighty God at the judgment where he will give an accounting for every idle word that he has ever spoken. Only the blood of Christ will make a difference at that point in time.

Hebrews 9:27

Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment,
