Update: My surgery went well and the prognosis is excellent. I appreciate all of your prayers more than you will ever know and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
In my book I write about how I came up with the mission statement for one of my first businesses. At the time I wrote it I was at a good point in my spiritual walk with the Lord, and as I was reflecting upon writing it I wondered what the mission statement of Jesus Christ might be if He were to open a business.
I pondered this for a while and then I thought about the time one of the Pharisees tested Jesus by asking: “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind’. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself’. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments” (Matthew 22:37-40).
I thought that this would be a perfect place to start.
God is love and loving God empowers us to love other people. Jesus stepped down from His throne in heaven in order to serve others, (which I believe to be perhaps the purest form of love). His entire life was devoted to serving others. The ultimate expression of this love was demonstrated on the cross and interestingly prior to this event He got down on His hands and knees and washed the filthy dirty feet of all of His disciples including Judas.
I do not think that the example of God incarnate serving others is accidently included in the Bible, or added as an afterthought; rather I believe that He did this to demonstrate how He wants us to live our lives too.
I used this lesson as the cornerstone of my mission statement and I began it by stating that our company must provide OUTSTANDING customer service. Second I vowed to provide products that are of only the highest quality. And lastly I felt that I should offer the foregoing at fair prices.
Ok this may sound a little dorky but it can be fun to be a dork. Imagine entering the business of Jesus Christ. Do you suppose you would be greeted with a gracious smile or an annoyed glare? Would an offer to help you be forthcoming, or when you walked in would He sullenly continue reading His newspaper and drinking His coffee? Wouldn’t you love to have a fine piece of furniture crafted by the master carpenter Jesus? Would He gouge you on the price? Guarantee His work?
Take a few moments and daydream about this and compare in your mind the Jesus store with any business that you know of including perhaps your own
Hmmm There is no doubt that people would be lined up for miles around to get in the Jesus store.
I wish I could be more like Jesus Christ. I need improvement in so many areas that I am ashamed to even think about it. I simply need to try much harder and really try to focus on it and improve. I think I will start by studying the life of Jesus at every opportunity and search for more answers like my mission statement. Below is a nice starting point of some things He advocates.
Matthew 5:1
Now when he saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them saying:
“Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.
Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called sons of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
