I learned Sunday that my favorite cousin died a few days ago. I have really never got to know my extended family much and am not close to most of them and in fact would not even recognize hardly any of them if I passed them on the street, but this cousin was different. I spent considerable amounts of time with him and was saddened to hear that he has departed us.
The Bible tells us that we should think about death often. Hmmm Do you ever wonder why? I do, and my guess is that we should realize that our lives on this earth are temporal and thinking of our own demise emphasizes the urgency of getting accomplished what needs to be accomplished in regard to God. Our lives are short in the context of a comparison to eternity, and the Bible even refers to it as being likened to a vapor; here for a moment and then vanished and remembered no more. We have been given a free spirit and during our short tenure on this earth we must make that most important decision that will affect us for everlasting eons. We must choose to accept or reject Jesus Christ as our Savior.
The Bible tells us that it has been appointed for man to die once and then after that we must face the judgment. We are all guilty of sin and unless Jesus already took the punishment for our sins, we will be eternally separated from His glorious presence and spend those eons in darkness in a place that Jesus described as hell filled with fire and brimstone, agony and suffering. My cousin has already crossed over into the next life and it is now too late to change his decision concerning Jesus Christ. My hope is that he accepted Jesus as his Savior and is at this very moment with the Lord and is “digging the scene” on streets of gold.
I suppose too that our God tells us to think about our deaths often to remind us that death is not a period, but a comma. It is just another day in untold millennia. I dare to say to you that it is not as important as those days leading up to it, whereby we make that ever so important decision concerning our relationship with Jesus Christ. You can face judgment fully forgiven and have Jesus Christ as your attorney of record and His precious blood covering every sin that you ever committed free for the asking, or you can face it alone and take the punishment for your sins yourself forever.
Jesus stands and waits, softly and gently calling, “All sinners come home”. Won’t you allow Him to protect you? Do something about this today if you have not done so already; and if you are all set with your decision, then witness to those around you who are still struggling with their most important decision
Hebrews 9:27
And as it is appointed for men
To die once, but after that the
judgment,
so Christ was offered once to
bear the sins of many. To those who
eagerly wait for Him He will appear
a second time, apart from sin, for
salvation.
Death is not a period but a comma
