I have been in LA for the last couple of days and I had my TV on in my room and was half-heartedly listening to the news when I heard my beautiful home state of Georgia being mentioned, so I perked up and tuned in. The local news in LA was covering a “major” story developing in Georgia. It appears that Georgia’s governor was leading a prayer and asking God to end the drought that has plagued our state. How shocking! The story evolved into reporting that several local churches had joined in the fray, and to hear them tell it this was all very strange. I felt that the article portrayed our governor as a “nut-case” for resorting to this measure.

The media in California or most places for that matter tend to want to portray Christians to be a fanatical fringe group. Of course to a Christian, praying for an end to the drought is a very natural thing. We know from studying God’s word that prayer works and therefore is a quite natural course of action for a governor, field hand, business person, or president to pursue. My hat is off to the governor for leading this effort. I assume this story was fully picked up nation-wide and perhaps others will join him; (I know that I am praying for an end to it). God hears all of those prayers and the Bible assures us He answers prayer when it is within His will.

It is sad to me to see our great country that was founded upon “In God we trust”, slowly turning its back on God. The Bible is very clear as to what will happen to a nation that puts their trust in God, (it will be blessed), and one that turns its back on God, (it will be destroyed). Our country has been blessed as no other before it, save Israel when they walked with God. Those blessings will turn to a curse as it did when Israel turned its back on God and our great nation will be devastated. The latter days that have been clearly prophesized for us indicate that people will begin to turn away from God as we step closer to the end times. I believe we are in those days now, but I also believe turning to God as the wicked city of Nineveh did after Jonah preached to them combined with prayer can delay it.

Christians should not remain in the closet about their faith and should support efforts like this. I find few politicians that I admire, but I admire this one at least for utilizing his position within our government (that God has allowed him to attain), to call attention to prayer.

1 Tim. 4:1
Now the Spirit expressly says
that in the latter times some will
depart from faith
