The other morning I was awakened by my television set coming on at a little after 3:00 AM. I ran in there expecting to do battle with a burglar or homeless person intruder, but no one was to be found. I thought that was really odd. I could not go back to sleep so I just went ahead and got up and decided to go on in to work a little early. When I went into my garage I noticed the trunk to my car was standing wide open. “What is going on?” I muttered to myself. I was beginning to think my house was haunted.

Suddenly it dawned on me that I had seen one of my twin granddaughters running around the house with my car keys. I am sure her little fingers found the trunk release button. Come to think of it I saw the other one with the satellite TV remote and also furiously pushing buttons on the television, TiVo, and other components before I could reach her. Hmmm My ghostly encounter had been debunked and instead of an apparition the television had been affected by remote programming of a not quite two year old.

My wife and I have been babysitting these little “scutters” for a couple of days to give my son and his wife a well earned vacation. Last night when I got ready for bed, I noticed greasy little finger prints combined with stains from green beans, carrots, and corn covering my expensive Armani suit. The suit had been smeared with food when I tried to feed one of the twins who was sitting in my lap and far more interested in happily playing with her food and throwing it on me and the floor than eating it. She also took the liberty of messing up my hair and pulling my nose, lips, and ears. The two of them also joined forces throughout the day to spread toys, blankets, Tupperware, and scooters all over my living room. And for good measure they tore a couple of pages out of some magazines and books and partially chewed them before we could reach them. Whew!

It is odd that I am amused at them over this instead of being angry. Had an adult gone in there and messed up my TV and I had to struggle with figuring out how to reprogram the satellite and reset it to its defaults from scratch, I would have been mad. Additionally if someone had strewn stuff all over my living room, thrown food on me, pulled my nose, or smeared food on my expensive Armani suit there would have been bloodshed.

Instead as I was coming in to work this morning, I was actually laughing and smiling at these events and thinking of just how much I love these little girls with all of my heart and it dawned on me that this has to be similar to how God feels about us. We are His little children and we mess up on occasion, (often without realizing just how serious it is), but instead of condemning us, Jesus loved us so much that He gave His very life on the cross for us and He totally forgives us our sins. I will never fully understand grace, but this is as close as I can come today

Luke 23:34
Then Jesus said, “Father forgive
them for they do not know
what they do.” And then they divided His
garments and cast lots.
