I met a television personality this weekend and it was appalling how arrogant he was. I have some mutual friends and acquaintances that know this person and they all seemed to indicate he was a good guy to know and encouraged me to look him up, but I found him to be near repulsive. He was full of himself.

I do not know what it is about fame, but it certainly has its effect on people. I live right down the street from a very famous television personality and he reminds me of the guy I met this weekend. Most folks that have met him describe him as an arrogant jerk. I suppose that the limos, private jets, money, and adoring fans lining up for autographs would be a tough enough obstacle for anyone to overcome when trying to remain humble. The Bible talks about the difficulty of a rich person getting into heaven as equivalent to a camel going through the eye of a needle. The eye of a needle’ refers to a small opening in the wall that surrounded Jerusalem. This small opening in the high thick walls of Jerusalem was in place for security reasons. It allowed access to the city, yet avoided the necessity of opening the main gates to the city and thereby avoided the possibility of allowing invaders to attack the city by entering through the gates. Camels laden with a heavy load of goods would have to get down on their knees and inch through the small opening on their knees. It was a slow arduous task, but it could be accomplished by expending major effort. Jesus said it was similar to the difficulty of the rich trying to inch their way through tough obstacles in order to gain entry into heaven.

I have met quite a few famous people and not all are like the guy I met this weekend, but I have to say the overwhelming majority are just like him. It is odd that so many people envy these people. Actually the rich and famous do not have much of a life. Temptations are overwhelming; their divorce rate is astronomical, many are hooked on drugs, alcohol and sexual perversion, and they have little privacy in their lives. When one considers the difficulty of their getting into heaven as outlined in the Bible on top of all of the rest, it appears that the good’ life is not all that it is cracked up to be. Just like all of humanity, unless someone who is rich and famous has a close personal relationship with the Lord, they will no doubt be miserable and lonely. All of the money and temporal pleasures this world has to offer will never be enough to fill up that deep void present in empty lives without Christ. Only God’s Holy Spirit can fill that void. These folks certainly should not be put on a pedestal and idolized, perhaps praying for them would be more appropriate.

Actually the beautiful’ people are not the rich and famous as society has portrayed them, but instead the rich and beautiful people are those who are rich with God’s presence in their lives and are beautiful on the inside as a result of His love. They are the people whose bank account is measured by their unending love for the Lord. The rewards enjoyed in this world by God’s beautiful people who love God with all of their heart and humbly follow Jesus seeking always to please Him far surpass the misery of the jet set’. The everlasting treasures awaiting God’s beautiful people in heaven will make the wealth of this world pale into significance.

Concentrate on the good life provided by God and forget about those things considered important by this world that matter least. The Bible tells us that soon those things will be burned up and forgotten along with everything else in this world, but our love for God and His love for us will endure forever in paradise.

Mark 9:35
If anyone desires to be first, he shall
be last of all and servant of all.
