I play the guitar some and have been writing some Christian based songs lately as a hobby. I was working on one this weekend that really has taxed my little brain. The title of it is “The Love of God”. I have picked out a neat set of riffs and chords and the musical part of the equation is pretty much in place. It has a nice peaceful and soothing Hawaiian music flavor to it and I really like the guitar part. What has been such a struggle is finding words to go along with the music that are adequate enough to try and describe the love of God. I wanted the chorus line to contain the most powerful and beautiful description of the love of God and it has been difficult to say the least.

How would you describe the love of God? I have been listing adjectives galore but they all seem inadequate. The love of God is free, beautiful, sweet, pure, incomprehensible, unending, undeserved, and limitless to name a few; all of these are on my list but I just cannot seem to put the song together yet without it sounding inadequate. (Suggestions are welcome.)

And for you smart alecks out there, yes I suppose my singing and playing might make the neighbors hound dog howl and shake his long ears for three days, but you know I bet God enjoys hearing it even if the dog (and possibly Simon on American Idol) will shake their heads and think it is awful I don’t think my song may be doomed by critics so much as the love of God is so much better than anything that I could ever play or sing. I do not feel I could ever do it justice. It is fun to try though.

Jesus answered a question as to how to pray one time and the prayer began by first glorifying God, “Our Father in heaven hallowed be your name”. I have always thought that was beautifully worded. The prayer ends with, “For Yours is the kingdom and the power and glory forever. Amen; again glorifying God. This is our cue. We should glorify God at every opportunity. I would invite you to find your own way to think about glorifying God through a song, a prayer, poem, or perhaps a painting or photograph. If you are not terribly creative in an artistic sense, just get somewhere where you can gaze at a sunrise or sunset or a black night filled with stars, view a beautiful orchid or brightly colored Macaw or whitetail deer or best of all some beautiful little blue eyed twin granddaughters and absorb and feel the love of God radiating its warmth through your soul and glorify Him for what He has done.

Next to glorifying God by praising Him and His love, I think He just might want His love perfected in us even more. How can God’s love be perfected? The Bible tells us: Keep His word

1 John 2:5
But whosoever keeps His word,
truly the love of God is perfected
in him. By this we know that we
are in Him.
