So, after writing Words for the Day 5 times a week for some 25 years or thereabouts, I asked God this morning what could I possibly write about.
So, a friend asked me not long ago how God talks to me. Does He physically say something aloud, even if it is a whisper? Does He just suggest things through my mind? This morning I asked, and I received an answer from God almighty, but it was not through a talking burning bush or a booming voice, it wasn’t even a whisper. I merely asked a question of Him, and I received the answer through my mind. In a nanosecond, it instantly came to me, as it does daily. His answer today: He wanted me to write about Him. (Sorry if you thought something more dramatic occurs when I hear from God, but He just makes His desires for me known to me in this fashion.)
To me, aside from being the Creator of everything, He signifies good and love more than any other attributes. Skeptics often claim that the God of the Bible is a cruel, vindictive God, but the Bible paints a different picture – God is a good and loving God. Good is closely entwined with love. Enduring love is ultimately rooted in and continually flows from God himself, even from before creation. He said of His creation, “It is good”. Nowhere was love and good demonstrated more effectively than when Jesus willingly took the punishment for our sins on the cross. Nothing in the character of God from my perspective is as important as His LOVE.
God has a limitless mind that cannot be conceived nor understood. Understanding God’s ways is impossible for finite minds. The Bible simply states that His ways are higher than ours and gives no further explanation, but if you think about all of creation being formed by Him, we can get an inkling of His unlimited intellect and the bigness of God. Founder of Campus Crusade for Christ, Bill Bright once said that He was merely a microbe living on the back of a flea that lives on a dog’s back in the Master’s house.
Oddly, God is humble about it, something many of us should take note of. Jesus washed the feet of His disciples – Can you imagine?
God is omnipresent meaning (like a microwave signal) He is everywhere at once. He is invisible to us, but we feel His presence. It reminds me of an undertow in the ocean. Though we might not see it, we definitely feel the pull. Perhaps the most poignant thing about this attribute is that He sees and hears everything. Uh oh . . .
One thing I love about God is that He is a splendid artist. All of creation is His canvas and I believe one of His favorite things to do is to create beauty. Color is derived from light. Walk into a pitch-black room to see this firsthand. God lights up the room and it opens a dazzling array of beauty that makes the most talented artist on earth shake their head in amazement. Being an artist also means that He loves music, and His Holy Bible is full of stories of worshipping through singing and playing instruments.
God is truth. Pilate asked, “What is truth?” It is the opposite of a lie and is not swayed by opinion or culture, or fads, or the prevailing sentiment. His word stays the same and will do so forever. In this world, we do not find truth apart from God. Truth is like taking a refreshing cool drink of water on a hot summer day and knowing that God’s laws are immutable, and nothing can change them is comforting. It makes it simple for us because we know the right thing to do by simply picking up a Bible. Like an owner’s manual, it tells us what to do to get the best results in our lives.
Of course, following those commands is not always the easiest thing to do, but we know God our loving Father stands ready to help even when we don’t know how we might ever dig ourselves out of the hole we have dug for ourselves. How do we know? Because the truth, His Bible, tells us so.
This brings me to the conclusion of this post. I must shorten it because I could write volumes on this subject. I have, however, saved the best for last. God is hope. I feel trapped in this evil world sometimes to the point that it sometimes seems utterly hopeless. It can be so discouraging that one could just slide into depression and never emerge were it not for the hope of eternal life in paradise with our God.
1 John 1:5
“This is the message that we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light, in him there is no darkness at all.”
