Opportunity is like awaiting a taxicab

Not long ago I wrote a piece on the proverbial half-full/ half-empty glass question. A friend of mine wrote the following: Have a buddy who is a recovering alcoholic. He always said it didn’t matter if the glass was half full or half empty, he was going to order another one anyway. Ha!”

A buddy invited me yesterday to an event in Oklahoma City at the Hobby Lobby headquarters with my friend Mike Huckabee as the main speaker, but plenty of other notables as well. The event is designed to raise money for a preacher boot camp, whereby they teach new pastors to adhere to God’s word and not be swayed by those, (primarily the big donors) who want them to water down their messages. The program is a huge success so far and they are determined to take it to the next level.

Ordinarily, I would have already purchased my plane ticket, but alas my macular degeneration-addled eyes have so impaired my vision that it precludes me to travel like I formerly did unless I take my wife with me to drive, and physically it is extremely difficult for her to make these trips anymore. After our last trip to the Keys, she is vowing to keep travel to a minimum.

I hate missing this opportunity and told my buddy so. He told me that I have more than paid my dues and not to worry about it. Ugh!

It brings to mind the above saying about ordering another one in the half full- half empty dialogue. He stated that he was going to order another one anyway, but gosh what if he doesn’t get another chance? I used to say opportunity is like a taxicab. When one pulls up, we can get in with no hesitation or wait on the next one. It might be a long wait if you miss out on the opportunity. I thought about this one freezing cold night in Chicago. The wind was howling, and my little jacket was entirely inadequate. Uber was forced out of the airport by the strong taxicab union at the time, and it seemed like it took forever before a union taxicab finally showed up. My point is we might have a very long wait and one may never happen along resounded loud and clear that night.

So, the moral of the story is when opportunity knocks, if you are able, take advantage and act. This is especially important when it comes to having an opportunity to tell someone about Jesus or merely deciding to wait until a better time. Geez, what if they were to pass away before that opportunity came along?  Or maybe we were raptured out of here? Don’t know about you, but I would hate to live with what might have been if only I would have taken that opportunity.

Colossians 4:5
Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity.

Have a great weekend and go to church this Sunday!
