I’m heading home today after having a great time in Atlanta with two of my sons and their families. We really enjoyed our visit and hate to leave, but they are probably glad to get back to normal. I cannot get over how my grandchildren have matured. It is a joy to be around them.
My wife got a call from the wife of one of my dearest friends telling us he was being put back in the hospital. They have asked the family to pray and fast and things are not looking good. He has had cancer off and on for many years and though recently was given a positive bill of health, he has relapsed.
I contrast what his wife and family are going through with our recent visit, and I am all the more thankful for our time together in our happy celebration. One of my sons and I watched a documentary about a songwriter (Matt Dillon) and in one of his songs he laments not spending more time with his father and telling him he loved him before he passed away and the same for his brother who went off to war and was killed. It seems this old world is full of busy people. We scurry around doing this and that and if we are not careful forget some of the most important things in life, telling those who are near and dear to us just how much we love them.
I have several friends who are in very bad shape health-wise, and I intend to spend some time with them even if it is by phone or text. I’m exceedingly glad I spent this time with my children and grandchildren and my other son and his family who live far away I spoke to by phone.
The Bible tells us that life is short and full of trouble, and in being aware of that we must make the most out of the good times when they present themselves. Prepare for an eternity of good times – What a day of rejoicing that will be! In the meantime, spend some time while here getting together with family and friends and if you love them, tell them.
Psalm 34:4
I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears.
