I was talking with a lady the other day who is deathly afraid of flying.
I asked her why she was so afraid of it, after all it is the safest way to travel. She indicated that she wanted to be in control. I wonder if she really thinks she is in control. About the only thing she can control is assuring herself that she will not die in an airplane crash by never getting on one. Of course her heart could quit beating, or she could have an aneurysm, or step in front of a Mac truck, or have a car crash or a million other things beyond our control. I fly more than I drive and never really even think about it. Now if the pilot drove like some of the folks with whom I have ridden in an automobile, especially female drivers, I would opt for more control, but I rarely even think about situations like this.
The Bible teaches that we are all going to die. God knows when it will happen, where it will happen, and how it will happen and there is nothing that we can do to alter or avoid it. I think that we should just sit back, relax, and leave the driving to Him and not waste our precious little time on this earth fearing for our lives. Assuming of course that we do not take foolish risks like driving while intoxicated, or jumping off a bridge and saying, “Well God is watching out for me, I have nothing to fear”. He will watch you alright, He will watch you plunge to your death.
God is in control, but we have free wills to do stupid and dangerous things. I don’t think flying in a commercial airplane is stupid or dangerous; however taking cocaine is very stupid and dangerous. We can control that aspect of our lives, but that is about it. Worry or anxiety for a believer is the opposite of faith. Underlying everything should be our confidence in the providence of God. God simply will not overlook the necessities of His children provided that it is according to His will for our lives.
What is His will for your life? You can find the answer through reading and studying His Word, the Bible, and praying daily for His guidance.
