I heard a song, Heaven help us all, by Stevie Wonder while driving home from deer hunting camp yesterday. Stevie was imploring people to pray for the afflicted in this world but also to pray for those doing the afflicting. In short, he prays that heaven will help us ALL. I’ve edited down the lyrics to eliminate recurring verses, but it goes something like this:
Heaven help the child who never had a home,
Heaven help the girl who walks the streets alone
Heaven help the roses if the bombs begin to fall,
Heaven help us all.
Heaven help the black man if he struggles one more day,
Heaven help the white man if he turns his back away.
Heaven help the man who kicks the man who has to crawl,
Heaven help us all.
Heaven help us, Lord, hear our call when we call
Heaven help the boy who won’t reach twenty-one,
Heaven help the man who gave that boy a gun.
Heaven help the people with their backs against the wall,
Lord, Heaven help us all.
Lord, hear our call when we call, help us . . .
As I watch the anger, lies, corruption, underhandedness and unfair proceedings to oust Trump I’m reminded that the good Lord wants us to pray for all people regardless of what they do or have done including those bitter hypocrites. It is the Christmas season and through there are those that obviously don’t understand its meaning of Christ bringing his message of forgiveness, peace, love, and joy to this planet, we should pray for them just the same.
Dang it’s hard to do though. Imagine Trump praying for those who disparage his wife and family and lie about him at every turn. I don’t know how a mere human could do such a thing, but the Holy Spirit lives within and through Him we are strengthened to do miraculous things – If we will just listen to Him.
Luke 6:27 – But to those of you who will listen, I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.
