I was in a room in my basement at night the other day and I turned off the lights before I got to the stairs. It was so dark that I could not see my hand one inch from my face. I groped around trying to find my way in the dark. I was thinking about this incident last night and I thought about Hell and having to spend eternity like that. I do not believe that light can exist apart from God. I envision Hell as being utter darkness and despair. The Bible states that there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. I believe that it will be a lonely place. I have heard more than once from unbelievers that if they go to Hell at least they will have plenty of company, as all of their drinking buddies will be there. I do not believe they will know it, apart from possibly hearing their fellow prisoners screams of agony. There will be many tortured souls in Hell, but I do not believe they will be socializing.
Jesus warned us about Hell more than any other person in the Bible (to my knowledge). He painted a vivid picture of Hell that should scare any reasonable person silly.
God sent His Son to earth as a way of avoiding eternal separation from Him and condemnation to an eternal tortuous existence. It is amazing to me that some people who have been privileged enough to have heard this message, still reject Him. It is similarly amazing that people continue to start smoking cigarettes when in this day and age, they know that they lead to disease and death. This is one thing that I will NEVER understand. Why do people reject Jesus? The Bible states that some people love the dark more than the light. I hear it, but I simply do not understand it.

John 3:17
For God did not send His Son
into the world to condemn the world,
but that the world through Him
might be saved.
He who believes in Him is not
condemned; but he who does not
believe is condemned already, because
he has not believed in the name of
the only begotten Son of God.
And this is the condemnation,
that the light has come into the
world, and men loved darkness
rather than light because their
deeds were evil.
